Visiting B52 Victory Museum has become a unique and informative experience when it comes to Hanoi travel. This destination provides visitors with detailed information about a glorious part in the history of Hanoi in particular and Vietnam in general. Located not far from the city center, the museum is very convenient for tourists to reach.

1. Where is B52 Victory Museum Hanoi?

  • Address: 157 Doi Can, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi

B52 Victory Museum was established to commemorate the defense of the Vietnamese people and army against the US Air Force’s air attacks in December 1972. This battle is often referred to as “Dien Bien Phu in the air” by Vietnamese or as Operation Linebacker 2 among Americans.

B52 Victory Museum is located in a historical neighborhood of Hanoi, where one of the American B-52 Stratofortress was shot down by Vietnamese armed forces. Together with Huu Tiep Lake, where remnants of a fallen B-52 aircraft are on display, the museum has become an essential historical landmark that shows the people of Hanoi’s heroic spirit in the defensive struggle.

2. The history of B52 Victory Museum in Hanoi

B52 Victory Museum may be the only museum in the world that is dedicated to air battles against B-52 aircraft. From December 18 – 29 in 1972, the battles were actually an aerial bombing campaign of the US that aimed to be an all-out effort to destroy major cities in Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi and Hai Phong. What’s special about this campaign is that this was the first time the B-52 Stratofortress – the world’s most feared and advanced bombers at that time – were widely used. “Dien Bien Phu in the air” witnessed the heaviest bomber strikes by the US Air Force ever since World War II.

During the 12 days and nights of the campaign, the Vietnamese air force shot down hundreds of US aircraft and captured many American pilots. The US dropped tens of thousands of tons of bombs, causing thousands of casualties. Still, they could not defeat the Vietnamese people. After losing this battle, the US had to sit down at the negotiation table to sign the Paris Agreement in 1973 and began withdrawing troops from Vietnam.

B52 Victory Museum was officially opened on December 22, 1997 as part of the 25th anniversary of the battle. It has been renovated and upgraded several times, now having more interesting narrations and vivid exhibits. Today, the museum has become one of the most notable Hanoi tourist attractions.

B52 Victory Museum has a total area of 7,550 square meters. It is divided into two separate exhibition areas: indoor and outdoor. Here, visitors can see the details of the battle “Dien Bien Phu in the air” and have a thorough understanding of the tactics applied by both sides.

Inside the building of B52 Victory Museum that covers 1,500 square meters, there are two main exhibition themes:

  • The spirit of “Determined to brave death for the survival of the Fatherland” of Hanoi’s armed forces throughout history
  • Details of the battle “Dien Bien Phu in the air”

These two themes are narrated and presented through a variety of exhibits, photos, videos, maps, and miniature models. Altogether, they bring a comprehensive view of the 12-day air battle, with all major events retold in detail. Emphasis is put on how Vietnamese missiles shot down B-52 aircraft, Hanoi’s 100mm anti-aircraft crews fought the US Air Force, Vietnamese air force stayed ready to protect the capital city, B-52 aircraft fell in Hanoi, etc.

A large part of the exhibition also focuses on the US military’s tactics, the war’s destructive consequences suffered by Vietnamese people, the destruction of Hanoi’s crowded neighborhoods and public facilities, including Bach Mai Hospital and Kham Thien Street. All these losses further showed the gallantry of the Vietnamese people and army as they managed to push back the world’s most powerful air force.

3.2. Outside the museum

Through these life-size exhibits, visitors can see how Vietnamese soldiers and people coordinate jet fighters, mid-range missiles, and anti-aircraft guns to create a strong defense against American air strikes, especially against the B-52 – the world’s most advanced bomber at that time.
