2. The history of Fujian Assembly Hall

This assembly hall is the place to worship Mazu, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and other deities of sea, wealth, and children. Mazu was the one who helped the ancient Chinese merchants overcome the storm and landed in Hoi An safely. Therefore, this assembly hall was built in 1697 by the Chinese people who migrated to Hoi An.

Originally, the assembly hall was built entirely of wood. It was not until 1757 that it was restored and rebuilt with bricks and tiled roofs as it is today. Compared to other assembly halls, Fujian Assembly Hall has the largest and oldest space, which is a unique highlight of the ancient urban architecture of Hoi An. In 1990, this place was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic of Vietnam.
