1. Is it obligatory to have a Vietnam visa travel? Things to know about visa exemptions

Vietnam is only accessible without a visa to citizens of a few certain nations. All other nationals must obtain a Vietnam visa before visiting Vietnam. Here is some information about Vietnam visa exemption that you should know:

  • For visitors staying for under 15 days, Vietnam visa is not required for: Japanese, South Korean, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish citizens. Russian citizens with return tickets are also exempt.
  • For visitors staying for under 30 days, Vietnam visa is not required for: Thai, Philippine, Malaysian, Singaporean, Indonesian, Cambodian, Brunei, and Laotian citizens.
  • For visitors staying for under 90 days or making multiple visits within six months, Vietnam visa is not required for: French citizens with active passports for diplomatic or other official missions.
  • For visitors staying for under 60 days, Vietnam visa is not required for: Chilean citizens with active passports for diplomatic or other official missions.
  • For visitors staying for under 60 days, Vietnam visa is not required for: holders of the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) from member nations of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
  • For visitors to Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam visa is not required for: Foreigners with foreign passports who enter Vietnam through an international border gate, travel to Phu Quoc Island, and stay there for under 15 days. The passports must be valid for 45 days at least. If visitors want to travel to other areas or stay on Phu Quoc Island for over 15 days after arriving, the immigration department will be in charge of issuing visas on-site.
  • No visa is required for Vietnamese overseas that will stay for under 90 days if they have a Vietnam visa exemption certificate.

2. The up-to-date Vietnam visa requirements

All COVID-19-related requirements for entry into Vietnam were removed on May 15, 2022. Pre-COVID entry requirements are once again in effect, though with some modifications, as follow:

  • Foreign visitors are required to take either a rapid antigen test (not self-test) 24 hours prior to entering Vietnam or a RT-PCR COVID-19 test with negative results 72 hours prior. Children under the age of two are exempt.
  • You must also fill out a health declaration and download the PC-COVID mobile application before entering Vietnam.
  • If you did not take a COVID-19 test before departing, you must do so within 24 hours of your arrival. If the test is negative, you are free to travel anywhere in Vietnam.
  • Foreign visitors to Vietnam should have travel or medical insurance that includes COVID-19 treatment and has a minimum liability of $10,000 USD.

An electronic visa (E-visa) is a type of visa issued to foreigners by the Vietnamese Immigration Department via electronic systems. Vietnam e-Visa is valid for a single-entry visit with a duration of up to 30 days. Citizens of the following nations can now obtain a Vietnam visa online:

Andorra, Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Australia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Brunei, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Chile, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Denmark, Estonia, Fiji, France, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, India, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Micronesia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Myanmar, Mongolia, Nauru, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Palau, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Poland, Philippines, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Solomon Islands, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Timor Leste, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, United Kingdom, United States of America, Vanuatu, Venezuela, and Western Samoa.

  • The e-Visa application procedure

Step 1: Prepare some documents for your Vietnam visa:

    • A 4×6 passport photo without wearing glasses on a white background, in .jpg file format
    • A photo of the data page from your passport, in .jpg file format
    • A passport with a minimum six-month expiration date
    • Temporary address in Vietnam, along with points of arrival and departure in Vietnam
    • A debit or credit card for payment

Step 2: Go to the official Vietnam visa website https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/en_US/trang-chu-ttdt and fill in the Vietnam visa application form.

Step 3: Upload your photos (passport data page and passport photo) in .jpg file format and fill out the form’s required fields.

Step 4: Pay the 25 USD e-Visa fee. Note the provided code.

Step 5: Within three working days, you should receive an email informing you the status of your e-Visa application. If not, check this link https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/tra-cuu-thi-thuc.

Step 6: Use the provided code to find your e-Visa online. Download and print two copies of the e-Visa for greater guarantee.

4. About Vietnam visa on arrival for a multiple-entry visit

If you plan to travel to Vietnam more than once or stay for over 30 days, you should apply for a visa when you arrive. To do this, you will need:

  • A 4×6 passport photo without wearing glasses on a white background
  • A completed application for a Vietnam visa
  • A valid passport or other form of identification that expires six months after the date you intend to enter Vietnam
  • A letter of approval from the Vietnamese embassy or consulate (if you pick up your visa at the airport)
  • Payment for Vietnam visa fee
