Ba Trieu Temple is located in Phu Dien Village, Trieu Loc Commune, Hau Loc District, Thanh Hoa Province. Conveniently accessible, Ba Trieu Temple is positioned just off National Road 1A, about 18 kilometers north of Thanh Hoa City and around 140 kilometers south of Hanoi.

The temple is dedicated to Lady Trieu (Trieu Thi Trinh), a national heroine who led a rebellion against the Chinese invaders of the Eastern Wu Dynasty in the 3rd century. Known for her bravery, Lady Trieu is celebrated in Vietnamese history for her fierceness against foreign domination. The temple stands as a testament to her legacy and a symbol of the courage she represented in the fight for independence.

1.2. History

Ba Trieu Temple has a long-standing history that dates back to the 6th century when it was originally built by King Ly Nam De to honor Lady Trieu. According to legend, during his reign from 542 to 548, King Ly Nam De personally prayed at the temple for Lady Trieu’s protection before embarking on a military campaign against invaders at the southern border. Upon his victorious return, the king revisited the temple to offer a thanksgiving ceremony and granted funds to the local villagers to repair and expand the temple.

Over the centuries, Ba Trieu Temple was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times due to various conflicts. During the reign of King Minh Mang (1820-1841), the temple was moved to its current location at the foot of Gai Mountain. By the end of the 18th century, the temple had been restored to the appearance it has today. In recognition of its historical significance, Ba Trieu Temple was officially designated as a special national relic in 2014.

The architecture of Ba Trieu Temple blends ancient charm with intricate design. The outer gate, made of monolithic stones, features a distinctive four-pillar style. Each pillar is topped with a phoenix figure and decorated with carvings of the four sacred animals, while elephant statues adorn the side walls. Beyond the gate lies a peaceful lake, with steps for visitors to enjoy the view.

The inner gate resembles a traditional triple-arch structure and is guarded by stone lion statues. Inside, two monolithic stone elephants stand on either side, adding to the temple’s grandeur. The hall is designed with three rooms and two wings. The rafters and beams are beautifully adorned with detailed carvings, completing the temple’s sophisticated yet serene aesthetic.

Ba Trieu Temple houses 297 priceless relics made from various materials like paper, wood, bronze, and ceramics, which date from the late 17th century to the early 20th century. 2.3. Vibrant festival

The Ba Trieu Temple Festival is celebrated annually from the 20th to the 23rd day of the 2nd lunar month. The festival begins with a ceremonial offering of a congratulatory letter and incense to honor the spirit of Lady Trieu Thi Trinh and other patriots. This vibrant event takes place on a large scale, following a process that goes through the temple, tomb, and communal house. The festival includes a variety of solemn activities such as the Moc Duc ceremony, the pallet procession, the Phung Nghinh ceremony, and a reenactment of the battle at Phu Dien Communal House.

3. Essential tips for a visit to Ba Trieu Temple

3.1. How to get there?

To reach Ba Trieu Temple from the center of Thanh Hoa City, make your way to Le Loi Avenue. Head east to a roundabout which connects to National Road 1A (QL1A). Continue on this road all the way to Trieu Loc Commune. The temple will be on the right side of the road. If you are not fond of driving yourself, you can take a taxi. Some reliable taxi companies in Thanh Hoa include Mai Linh Taxi, MeKong Taxi and Taxi 36.

 

3.2. When to visit?

The best time to visit Thanh Hoa is from March to August. This is the time of summer, when the weather is ideal for exploring the region’s famous beaches. March is an especially great time to visit as it coincides with the Ba Trieu Temple Festival.

3.3. What to explore near the temple?

Near Ba Trieu Temple, there is a fascinating complex of relics spread across 3.8 hectares in Trieu Loc Commune. This complex showcases several attractions tied to Lady Trieu such as Ba Trieu Mausoleum, the mausoleum of the three generals of the Ly family, Ban The Temple, Phu Dien Communal House, and De Tu Temple.

  • Ba Trieu Mausoleum: Situated atop Tung Mountain, this mausoleum is encircled by a raised tomb, bordered by a square-shaped flower wall that adds to its beauty. It has undergone many restorations, with a notable change in construction material: from traditional brick plastered with lime mortar to monolithic stones.
  • The mausoleum of the three generals of the Ly family: This mausoleum honors Ly Cong Thanh, Ly Cong Hoang, and Ly Cong My. According to legend, these generals fought alongside Lady Trieu. Their mausoleum stands as a tribute to their bravery against invaders and their commitment to the cause of freedom.
  • Ban The Temple: Legend has it that Ban The Temple is the site where the three Ly brothers swore an oath to follow Lady Trieu. Despite its simplicity, the temple holds historical significance as a place of loyalty, connecting the present to the heroic past of the Ly brothers and their alliance with Lady Trieu.
  • De Tu Temple: Located near Eo Mountain in Phu Dien Village, De Tu Temple houses three royal decrees, including a copy from the 5th year of the Canh Thinh era (1797). Built in an arched style, the temple features a floor paved with ancient red bricks, reflecting its historical significance and architectural charm.
  • Phu Dien Communal House: Built during the reign of King Canh Hung (1772), this communal house offers a view of Tung Mountain. It features stunning four-pillar architecture, intricately carved columns, and beautifully adorned halls. The house reflects the rich architectural heritage of the local community.
