1. An overview of Can Tho Bridge

Can Tho Bridge, a landmark of Can Tho, connects Hung Phu Ward in Cai Rang District to Vinh Long Province, spanning the Hau River. Located about 3.2 kilometers downstream from the former Can Tho Ferry, this impressive structure represents the city’s progress and serves as a major gateway to Mekong Delta.

With a main span length of 550 meters, Can Tho Bridge is the cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in Southeast Asia and ranks among the top 10 most protracted in the world. The construction of the Can Tho Bridge in Vietnam took over 2,000 days and nights, reflecting exceptional engineering and international cooperation between Japan and Vietnam. Even 14 years after its inauguration, it remains a key attraction, symbolizing the region’s growth and the spirit of Can Tho’s development.

2. The outstanding features of Can Tho Bridge

Can Tho Bridge, constructed on September 25, 2004 and opened on April 24, 2010, was funded by Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) and Vietnam’s counterpart funding. The My Thuan Project Management Unit, under the Ministry of Transport, oversaw the project.

Spanning a total of 15.85 kilometers, the bridge includes a 5.41-kilometer approach road from Vinh Long, a 2.75 kilometers main bridge and leading spans, and a 7.69 kilometers approach road from Can Tho. The bridge’s design features an inverted Y-shaped structure with 216 supporting cables. It has a total width of 23.1 meters, comprising four 3.5 meter-wide traffic lanes and two 2.75 meter-wide pedestrian walkways. The bridge allows ships up to 10,000 DWT to pass through, with a vertical clearance of 39 meters and a horizontal clearance of 200 meters.

The central part of the bridge is a 1,010-meter cable-stayed span designed for speeds up to 80 kilometer/hour. Its central span, measuring 550-meter, holds the record for the longest central span of any cable-stayed bridge in Southeast Asia.
