2. History and legends

According to historical records, Cua Ong Temple has stood for over a century. Initially, it was a modest shrine made of bamboo and palm leaves. Over time, it underwent several renovations, particularly in 1907, 1916, 1946, 2014, and 2016. These efforts led to the construction and expansion of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Temples, and the accompanying pagoda, forming the vast 18,125-hectare complex today.

Cua Ong Temple is closely linked to the legend of Tran Quoc Tang. According to folklore, while patrolling around Cua Suot Beach on a stormy night, he saw a large rock emerging from the waves. He calmly sat upon the rock, which miraculously stayed afloat despite the surging waters. When the storm subsided, the locals could no longer find him, except for his hat on the stone. They took it as a sacred sign, enshrined it in a temple, and reported the event to the royal court. This occurred on the 16th day of the 8th lunar month in 1311, which is now commemorated as his death anniversary.

As the temple’s primary deity, the statue of Tran Quoc Tang is enshrined alongside an inscription that honors his legacy as a formidable general, celebrated for his victories especially the historic Bach Dang battle. Notably, it is the only shrine in Vietnam that worships an entire lineage of the Tran Dynasty, housing a collection of 30 statues. These statues depict members of the royal family and loyal generals who served under the legendary commander Tran Hung Dao.
