2. Learn about the long-standing history of Dieu De Pagoda

Under the Nguyen Dynasty, Dieu De Pagoda was once a splendid garden house where Prince Mien Tong, son of King Minh Mang, was born. After the Prince succeeded the throne of his father, he decided to construct Dieu De Pagoda on a 5000-square-meter platform of his former home with a view to praying for health and fortune for his people. The king mobilized 600 soldiers to build the pagoda on a massive scale, and the construction was finished in 1844.

When King Ham Nghi was defeated by the French in May 1885, the Nam Trieu government was forced to live and work at this pagoda; however, most of the pagoda’s buildings were damaged and destroyed in a war two years later. In the year 1889, King Thanh Thai allocated a large amount of money and human resources to restore the pagoda but could not preserve its original scale. Until now, although Dieu De Pagoda has experienced numerous restorations, the old architecture of the Nguyen Dynasty is still preserved.

3. Admire the prominent architectural features of Dieu De Pagoda

Declared as one of the three national pagodas in Hue by Emperor Thieu Tri and restored throughout the reign of the Nguyen Dynasty, Dieu De Pagoda is an extraordinary structure still retaining some special characteristics of the Nguyen Dynasty’s royal architectural aesthetics. The pagoda is famous for its four low towers, including two bell towers, one drum tower, and one steel tower.
