4. Explore the Dong Da Mound Festival

The Dong Da Mound Festival, celebrated annually on the fifth day of the first lunar month, commemorates the heroic victory of Emperor Quang Trung in defending the nation against invaders.

The festival begins with a procession ceremony. Incense is lit at Khuong Thuong Communal House, and the procession will depart from there to the mound, accompanied by the offering of six types of wine. Upon reaching the mound, an incense offering ceremony takes place at Quang Trung Monument, followed by a speech highlighting the nation’s triumph during the Ngoc Hoi – Dong Da battle. In the afternoon, a requiem ceremony is held at Boc Pagoda and Dong Quang Pagoda. Boc Pagoda serves as a memorial for the Tay Son soldiers who fell in battle, while Dong Quang Pagoda offers prayers for the deceased invaders.

After the ceremonies come the activities. The festival features an epic performance depicting the nation’s victory over invaders. Lion dances performed by agile performers symbolize the nation’s heroism, accompanied by lively drumbeats and enthusiastic cheers. In addition, folk activities such as martial arts demonstrations, human chess, tug of war, and cockfighting entertain attendees of all ages. Children can participate in toy-making, which adds to the festival’s joyful spirit.
