1.1. Location

Hoa Phong Tower is located on the shore of Hoan Kiem Lake, along Dinh Tien Hoang Street, right in front of Hanoi Central Post Office. Situated in the heart of Hanoi, the tower is easily accessible by various means of transportation:

• By bus: There are many bus routes that go to/pass by Hoan Kiem Lake, such as bus number 08, 09, 14, 31, 36, 86, etc. A bus trip in Hanoi typically costs only 7,000 VND.

• By taxi: Catching a taxi is the most convenient way to get around the city. You can either hail a taxi on the road or utilize a ride-hailing mobile application like Xanh SM to reach Hoan Kiem Lake directly.
• By motorbike: If you have rented a motorbike, you can ride to Hoan Kiem Lake by following the directions on Google Maps. There are many parking spots around the lake.

1.2. History

Hoa Phong Tower is a remarkable remnant of the Bao An Pagoda complex, a structure that was constructed hundreds of years ago. According to historical records, the construction of Bao An Pagoda was overseen by Nguyen Dang Giai, the governor of Ha Ninh (Hanoi – Bac Ninh) at the time, who initiated and raised funds for the grand scale construction of the pagoda in 1846 during Emperor Thieu Tri’s reign.

Upon its completion, Bao An Pagoda was one of the most majestic structures in Hanoi. The entire pagoda complex used to comprise 36 roofs and 150 chambers. However, in 1888, French colonialists demolished the pagoda to construct the Central Post Office. Only Hoa Phong Tower, located behind the pagoda, was preserved. Today, it stands as a silent witness to the rich historical heritage of Hanoi.

2. Architecture of Hoa Phong Tower

Hoa Phong Tower consists of three levels. The first level is the largest and tallest among the three. It features arched doorways in all four directions, symbolizing openness. Above each doorway, there are inscriptions:

• Bao An Mon (Gate of Gratitude)
• Bao Nghia Mon (Gate of Righteousness)
• Bao Duc Mon (Gate of Virtue)
• Bao Phuc Mon (Gate of Blessing)

The second level of the tower is characterized by a pillar at each of its four corners. These pillars each support a statue of four guardian lions, all facing east. The third level is inscribed with the name “Hoa Phong Thap” (Hoa Phong Tower). At the top, the tower is adorned with a gourd-shaped ornament.

• Ngoc Son Temple: Ngoc Son Temple is situated on an islet in the northeast of Hoan Kiem Lake. Before heading in, you will pass by Thap But Tower (Pen Tower) and the iconic red The Huc Bridge.
• Ly Thai To Park: Just about 150 meters to the north of Hoan Kiem Lake, Ly Thai To Park is a public space that attracts both locals and tourists, where many cultural events of the city are held.
• Hanoi Old Quarter: After exploring around Hoan Kiem Lake, you can take a stroll in Hanoi Old Quarter, visit local shops, and try all sorts of street food. The quarter gets especially fun on weekends, when the streets are for pedestrians only, with night markets and lots of entertainment activities. 
• Ba Kieu Temple: Ba Kieu Temple is a small temple that is also located on Dinh Tien Hoang Street. Right next to it is a hundred-year-old banyan tree. After many renovations, the old charm of this temple has been preserved, making it a nostalgic attraction amidst the bustling streets of Hanoi.
