2. History of Perfume Pagoda

Perfume Pagoda has a rich history intertwined with legends and historical events. Believed to have been discovered over 2,000 years ago by a Buddhist monk, the site was named after a Tibetan mountain where Buddha practiced asceticism. The original temple, built in the 15th century during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong, was a modest structure at the location of the current Thien Tru Pagoda.

Significant development occurred in 1686 under King Le Hy Tong, including the construction of a terrace and stone steps. In 1793, bronze statues of Buddha and Bodhisattva were installed, replacing the damaged original statues. The pagoda complex suffered damage during the Indochina wars, leading to the destruction of Thien Tru Pagoda’s gate and bell tower. The bell tower was renovated in 1986 and the gate was reconstructed in 1994.
