2. Architectural highlights of Phung Hung Old House, Hoi An

As one of the most beautiful ancient houses in Hoi An, Phung Hung Old House is a must-visit for those eager to discover the architectural beauty of this town.

2.1. Overall architecture

From the outside, this old house is designed as a tube-shaped structure with a spacious facade, two stories high, and four roofs with two overlapping in the Northwest direction. The architecture of the house is influenced by three cultures: Chinese-style balconies and doors, Japanese-style central quadrangular roofs, and traditional Vietnamese roof systems.

The house was constructed primarily of wood, surrounded by brick, and tiled with yin-yang roof tiles. The columns, beams, and rafters were made of precious wood with intricate carvings, placed on solid stone bases to prevent subsidence and termite infestation.

A distinctive feature of the house is its flexibility in use, with foldable doors leading to the attic for convenient furniture movement during floods. Additionally, all doors in the house are easily removable to keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer. The staggered arrangement of yin and yang roof tiles creates ventilation slots, ensuring airflow throughout the year.
