Initially, Tam Giang Lagoon, together with Thuan An Estuary and Perfume River, served as the primary waterway to access the imperial capital of Hue. This lagoon is also the meeting point of several rivers that flow into the sea. 

Due to the narrow sea gate, strong water currents were present, making boats susceptible to overturning. However, during the Nguyen Dynasty, an official took measures to improve this waterway by expanding the sea gate, resulting in a significant decrease in boat accidents.
