A mesmerizing blend of Asian and European influences, the pagoda offers a window into the region’s rich cultural exchange and artistic heritage.
1. Overview of Vinh Trang Pagoda in Vietnam
Located in My Tho City, Tien Giang Province, South Vietnam, Vinh Trang Pagoda stands as a testament to the fusion of traditional East Asian and Western architectural styles.
Originally built in 1849 under the name Thien Hau Pagoda, it underwent a transformation in 1904, adopting the name Vinh Trang. Over time, it has garnered recognition, being designated a National Historical and Cultural Relic in 1984 and earning a place in the Vietnam Book of Records in 2007 as the “first pagoda in Vietnam with an architectural style that combines the East and West.”

2. The history of construction of Vinh Trang Pagoda
Vinh Trang Pagoda was originally built in the early 19th century. In 1894, Venerable Thich Hue Dang from Giac Lam Pagoda came to preside over the pagoda and organized the construction of a large temple. He named it Vinh Truong Pagoda, hoping that the pagoda would “last forever with the mountains and rivers and exist forever with heaven and earth.” That is why the local people still call it Vinh Trang today.
In 1907, Venerable Tra Chanh Hau repaired the main hall, mixing Asian and European architectural styles. In 1930, Venerable Minh Dang completely renovated the pagoda to give it the appearance it has today.

3. What to explore in Vinh Trang Pagoda in My Tho?
3.1. The sophisticated architecture of the pagoda
The most striking feature of the pagoda is its distinctive architecture, which features a harmonious blend of traditional East Asian and Western styles. The main hall is adorned with statues of Buddha and other Buddhist deities, and the roof, embellished with dragons and mythical creatures, is made of tiles.
Furthermore, the pagoda’s enchanting allure and tranquil ambiance are accentuated by the surrounding gardens and ponds, complemented by a lofty bell tower. The gardens boast a vibrant array of flowers and trees, while delicate lotus flowers bloom in the ponds. The multi-story bell tower serves as a beacon, calling the faithful to prayer. Vinh Trang Pagoda is not only a site of worship but also a place of learning and a sanctuary of peace.

3.2. Many art works by artisans from all over the country
The interior of the pagoda is home to many works of art by artisans from all over Vietnam. For example, the central pillar of the main hall features a set of eight immortals riding animals. This work was created in 1907–1908 by local artisans. Compared to the other panels around it, this one is older, but it is of higher artistic quality. It is a rare relief sculpture from the early 20th century, and it shows that the art of sculpture in the South developed quite early on.
The four main pillars of the pagoda are all decorated with dragon pillars. The outer two pairs were donated by Mrs. Le Thi Ngoi in Ben Tre province in 1909. A special feature of these dragon pillars is their unique composition: they feature phoenixes standing on the heads of dragons. It can be said that the entire beauty of Vinh Trang Pagoda is concentrated in its art, of which the statues are the majority.

3.3. Collection of precious Buddha statues
In addition to its unique architecture, this pagoda is also a popular destination for pilgrims who come to worship and pray. The pagoda houses a collection of over 60 precious Buddha statues made from various materials, such as wood, bronze, and terracotta. All of the statues are gilded with gold, which gives them a mysterious, majestic, and awe-inspiring appearance. The most notable statue is the set of 18 Arhats carved from jackfruit wood in the early 20th century, which are placed on either side of the main hall.
With an area of 20,000 square meters, Vinh Trang Pagoda is also famous for its three large outdoor statues:
- A 24-meter-tall statue of Amitabha Buddha in front of the pagoda
- A 20-meter-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha on the side of the pagoda
- A 32-meter-long statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in the parinirvana pose.
