Vietnam is recognized as a country with high biodiversity, making it a hotspot for wildlife in Vietnam. There are approximately 7,500 species of microorganisms, 20,000 plant species, 10,500 animal species, 7,000 underwater invertebrate species, 2,500 fish species, and 50 species of sea snakes, sea turtles and marine mammals.

1. Notable species of wild animals in Vietnam

1.1. The most famous wild animals native to Vietnam

  • Tragulus javanicus (Cheo cheo Nam Duong):

This is the smallest ungulate species of wild animals in Vietnam. With legs measuring around 40-50 cm and an average weight of 1.3-2.3 kg, they have a deer-like appearance without horns. These chevrotains inhabit flat, dry areas with dense undergrowth. Their diet consists of fruits, mushrooms, vegetation, and insects. They are found in various provinces across Vietnam.

  • Rheinardia ocellata (Tri sao)

Rheinardia ocellata is a stunning bird species found in Vietnam. With yellow-brown and black plumage, brown eyes surrounded by blue skin, and a red beak, it stands out in appearance. However, environmental changes and illegal hunting have led to a rapid decline in their population, making them a threatened species according to the IUCN Red List.

  • Muntiacus truongsonensis (Mang Truong Son)

This is a small deer species found in Vietnam. With yellow-brown or rusty-yellow fur, slender legs, and short antlers in males, it holds significant scientific and ecological value. Discovered in Truong Son Mountain Range, it is considered a species of conservation concern due to its limited information and unique genetic material.

1.2. 8 endangered wild animals in Vietnam

  • Bos gaurus (Bo tot): Bos gaurus is listed as a rare and endangered animal by the IUCN Red List. It is the largest bovine species. There are only about 300 individuals remaining in Vietnam, found in the national parks in Lao Cai, Kon Tum, and Lam Dong provinces.
  • Pseudoryx nghetinhensis (Sao la): Sao la, one of the rarest animals in the world, inhabits the remote mountainous forests of Truong Son Mountain Range in Vietnam and Laos. This is one of the critically endangered animals in Vietnam, classified in Vietnam’s Red Book.
  • Tiger (Ho): The tiger species known as Indochinese tiger inhabits Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, and is smaller in size compared to other tiger species. Due to hunting, the population of Indochinese tigers has dramatically declined, with only a few dozen individuals remaining in the forests of Vietnam.
  • Elephant (Voi): The largest land animal in Vietnam, an elephant can reach heights of up to 3 meters and weigh several tons. Currently, they are in a critically endangered state and are only found in the Central Highlands, particularly in Dak Lak Province.
  • Hyelaphus porcinus (Huou vang): In Vietnam, the hyelaphus porcinus can be found in the wetland areas of the Central Highlands. Their total population in Vietnam is estimated to be only a few hundred, highlighting the need for conservation efforts.
  • Rhinopithecus (Vooc mui hech): This is a unique species found only in some mountainous provinces of northern Vietnam. Estimates suggest that there may be around 110 individuals remaining in Vietnam.
  • Trachypithecus poliocephalus (Vooc dau trang): According to the global nature conservation association, there are only about 60 individuals of white-headed langur remaining worldwide. These individuals are concentrated in Vietnam, specifically on Cat Ba Island (Hai Phong).
  • Trachypithecus delacouri (Vooc mong trang): Also known as Delacour’s langur, this is an endemic primate species found exclusively in Vietnam. They are critically endangered, with a remaining population of less than 250.

  • Asian giant hornet: This species, commonly referred to as the “murder hornet,” possesses a potent sting that inflicts intense pain. Displaying aggression when provoked, its venom can lead to severe allergic reactions and, in certain instances, prove fatal.
  • Malayan pit viper: The jungles of Vietnam are home to this deadly venomous snake species. Their venom is known to cause intense pain, tissue damages, and various complications for its victims.
  • Maylayan sun bear: Although generally not aggressive, interactions with the Malayan sun bear can be perilous. When feeling threatened or trapped, they may display defensive actions, such as biting and clawing.
