Bach Long Vi Island: A hidden outpost in Hai Phong, Vietnam

25/08/2025 328 views

Bach Long Vi Island is a familiar name for most Vietnamese people thanks to its significant role in the sovereignty of the country. It is also known for being a very gorgeous spot with loads to see and do, especially if the sun, sand, and sea is your definition of a good vacation.

1. Overview of Bach Long Vi Island

1.1. Location & origin of the name of the island

Bach Long Vi Island is Vietnam’s furthest offshore island in the Gulf of Tonkin. The island lies about 110 kilometers away from Hon Dau in Hai Phong. It is a mere 15 nautical miles away from the maritime boundary between Vietnam and China. Covering roughly 2.5 square kilometers at high tide and expanding to 4 kilometers at low tide, this compact island stuns with its natural beauty.

The name “Bach Long Vi” translates to “White Dragon’s Tail,” a poetic nod to local folklore. Legend has it that a group of dragons once descended from the heavens to the sea, with some settling in Hai Phong to form Cat Ba Archipelago and others in Quang Ninh to create Ha Long Bay. The dragon’s tail fell into the sea on its way back, becoming what is known as Bach Long Vi Island.

1.2. History

The history of Bach Long Vi Island is as fascinating as its scenery. It was originally an uninhabited island from the late 19th century until 1920, when residents from Quang Yen cultivated the land here for farming, keeping livestock, and fishery.

By 1937, under King Bao Dai’s government, a small garrison of 12 men was stationed here, establishing a village-commune system with an appointed chief. During World War II, the island saw dramatic shifts. The Japanese army seized control in 1945, only for France to take over. From the late 1940s to mid 1950s, Bach Long Vi Island witnessed a part of the revolution in China.

By the late 1950s, Vietnam regained sovereignty, and in 1992, Bach Long Vi Island was officially designated as a district of Hai Phong. Fast forward to July 1, 2025, the island is set to take on a new chapter as a special administrative-economic zone.

1.3. Significance

Bach Long Vi Island holds immense strategic and economic value. Positioned as a gateway in the Gulf of Tonkin, it serves as a sentinel for international maritime routes, playing a critical role in Vietnam’s security. The island is envisioned as a future hub for fishery in the North by being one of the 8 largest fishing areas of the Gulf.
