Where is the Mekong River

Where is the Mekong River? – Geographic highlights and facts

20/11/2024 855 views

The Mekong River is one of the most significant rivers in Asia. It is a natural and cultural treasure. But where is the Mekong River, specifically? Dive into this detailed article to find out!

1. Where is the Mekong River located on the world map?

Where is the Mekong River? The Mekong River is located in Asia, and on the world map, it is featured as the longest river in Southeast Asia.

It starts from the Tibetan Plateau in China and flows roughly 4,900 kilometers through six countries: China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, before emptying into the sea through the Mekong Delta.

Besides knowing the Mekong River is in which country, it is worth knowing that this river is the 7th longest in Asia and 12th longest in the world. It drains a vast area of 795,000 square kilometers with an annual water discharge of 475 cubic kilometers. As such, it ranks as the tenth largest globally, water discharge-wise.

The Mekong River is divided into two: Upper and Lower Mekong River Basins. The former includes the Tibetan Plateau, Three Rivers Area, and Lancang Basin in China and Myanmar. The latter, spanning Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, includes the Northern Highlands, Khorat Plateau, Tonle Sap Basin, and the Mekong Delta. Each region has distinct topographies, drainage patterns, and geological features.

2. What are the major tributaries of the Mekong River?

The Mekong River has left-bank and right-bank tributaries, each contributing to the river’s flow based on regional rainfall patterns.

In the Upper Mekong Basin’s Yunnan Province (China), tributaries are relatively small. As the river reaches the Northern Highlands, larger left-bank tributaries like the Nam Ta, Nam Ou, Nam Soung, and Nam Khan join in. Right-bank tributaries are the Nam Mae Kok and Nam Mae Ing.

Further downstream in the Khorat Plateau, the Songkhram and Mun Rivers enter the Mekong on the right bank, while the Nam Ca Dinh, Se Bang Fai, and Se Bang Hiang Rivers enter on the left bank. Another important left-bank tributary system is the 3S Basin, comprising the Se Kong, Se San, and Srepok Rivers.

The Tonle Sap River is unique in that it flows from the Tonle Sap Lake into the Mekong during the dry season and reverses its flow during the rainy season. The Bassac River, the largest distributary of the Mekong, branches off, marking the start of the Mekong Delta. In this fertile region of southern Vietnam, known as the “Nine Dragons,” a few smaller distributaries split from the main channels of the Mekong and Bassac Rivers.

3. How does the Mekong River’s location shape its ecology?

From the glaciated Tibetan Plateau to the tropical lowlands of Southeast Asia, the Mekong River’s diverse geography shapes its ecological landscape.

3.1. Climate

The climate across the Mekong River Basin, varying widely, influences the river’s seasonal flows. In the Upper Mekong Basin, the climate ranges from high-altitude continental and temperate to glaciated peaks on the Tibetan Plateau, where snow covers much of the landscape when the wet season arrives. Average temperatures in the dry season are around 13 degrees Celsius, while the climate in Yunnan Province is temperate.

In contrast, the Lower Mekong Basin experiences a tropical monsoonal climate dominated by the Southwest Monsoon. This results in distinct wet and dry seasons. The monsoon is between June and November and brings heavy rainfall. The dry season (December to May) is cooler with minimal rainfall in most regions except the Mekong Delta in Cambodia and Vietnam.

Temperatures in the lowlands and valleys remain fairly stable, hovering around 32 degrees Celsius in the hottest months. However, in the highlands of Laos, seasonal temperature variation is more obvious, with wet-season averages around 15 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall distribution follows an east-to-west gradient. The rain-soaked uplands of Laos and Cambodia receive up to 3,000 millimeters annually, whereas the drier Khorat Plateau in Thailand receives between 1,000 and 1,600 millimeters.

In the Upper Mekong Basin, rainfall varies from 600 millimeters on the Tibetan Plateau to 1,700 millimeters in the Yunnan mountains, all regulated by the global monsoon system. This climate variety across the basin allows for the ecological diversity of the Mekong River.

3.2. Natural resources

The Mekong River Basin’s diverse geography endows it with abundant natural resources. Approximately 15,000 cubic meters of water flow into the Mekong mainstream every second, irrigating vast forests and wetlands that support thousands of species and provide essential resources.

Located within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, the basin is home to mixed evergreen, deciduous, montane, and mangrove forests, along with shrublands and karst landscapes. Non-timber forest products are crucial for rural residents and market supplies, offering foods, medicines, and dyes. The basin also contains untapped mineral resources such as copper, gold, lead, phosphate, zinc, etc.

The Mekong Basin’s wetlands play essential roles in social, economic, and cultural systems. They support agriculture, aquaculture, and fisheries and generate revenue from tourism. These ecosystems also provide significant indirect benefits. For example, they absorb flood waters during the wet season. The mangroves along the coast prevent erosion. The urban wetlands filter pollutants before they reach the river.

All in all, diverse resources highlight the basin’s important role in sustaining both ecological and human communities.
