1. About B-52 Lake Hanoi: Location and history

• Location: Ba Dinh Ward, Hanoi

B-52 Lake preserves the remnants of a B-52 bomber which was downed over the city’s skies in 1972. During the war, from December 18 to December 29 in 1972, the U.S. launched an unprecedentedly large air campaign targeting Hanoi. Over 12 days and nights of intense fighting, Hanoi’s soldiers and civilians shot down 25 B-52 bombers, one of which had left its wreckage around Huu Tiep Lake. A part of the bomber remains submerged in the lake.

2. The roles of B-52 Lake in Hanoi at present

Most of the wreckage is submerged in the water. Only a part of it protrudes above the surface, measuring approximately 4 meters in length and 2 meters in width. A symbol of the U.S. Air Force can be seen on the wreckage. Of all the remnants of the air battle in 1972, only the wreckage in Huu Tiep Lake remains remarkably intact today. To preserve this significant historical site, the Ministry of Culture and Information has recognized the lake as a historical relic. Today, B-52 Lake stands as a symbol of Hanoi’s triumph over the U.S. It also serves as a captivating artifact for tourists visiting the B52 Victory Museum.
