Da Nang, the vibrant coastal city of Vietnam, is known for its breathtaking bridges spanning the Han River. These architectural wonders are not just transportation links but also cultural and artistic symbols of the city. Let’s explore six of the most iconic Da Nang bridges.

1. Dragon Bridge

  • Location: Nguyen Van Linh Street, Hai Chau Ward, Da Nang

Dragon Bridge is one of the most spectacular landmarks in Da Nang, designed to resemble a golden dragon stretching toward the sea. The bridge was selected from an international architecture competition and officially opened in 2013 after four years of construction. Spanning 666.5 meters, it is built with reinforced concrete and steel, featuring a dragon sculpture by renowned Vietnamese artist Pham Van Hang.

Even more impressive, Dragon Bridge’s dragon head uses an advanced electromechanical system to breathe fire and spray water. Every Saturday and Sunday night starting at 9PM, this stunning display attracts large crowds, creating an unforgettable experience for visitors.

2. Han River Bridge

  • Location: Le Duan Street, An Hai Ward, Da Nang

Han River Bridge, also known as Han Swing Bridge, is a proud symbol of Da Nang’s growth and innovation. More than just a key transport link, this iconic bridge is one of the must-visit Da Nang attractions. Completed in 2000, it was the first swing bridge in Vietnam, designed and built entirely by Vietnamese engineers. Stretching 487.7 meters across the Han River, its central section can rotate 90 degrees to allow large ships to pass. This movement takes place between 11:00 PM and midnight on weekends.

3. Tran Thi Ly Bridge

  • Location: Crossroads of 2/9 Street and Duy Tan Street, Hoa Cuong Ward, Da Nang

Tran Thi Ly Bridge is named after a female revolutionary hero from Quang Nam who fought during the Vietnam War. It replaced an older bridge of the same name and was built around the same time as Dragon Bridge, with construction starting in 2009 and opening in 2013.

What makes Tran Thi Ly Bridge unique among other Da Nang bridges is its cable-stayed structure with a single inclined pylon. The bridge has set impressive records: its pylon bearings support the heaviest pylon load in the world, and it features the largest single-plane cable system in Southeast Asia. The bridge’s design is elegant and feminine, reflecting its namesake. From a distance, its cables and structure resemble a sailing ship with a red sail, adding to its aesthetic appeal.

Thuan Phuoc Bridge has a clearance height of 27 meters, allowing large vessels to pass underneath with ease. The construction encountered major difficulties because of the area’s intricate geological conditions and powerful winds. However, this Da Nang bridge was successfully completed and remains an engineering feat. With its elegant and streamlined structure, Thuan Phuoc Bridge adds to the visual charm of Da Nang’s coastline and the Son Tra Peninsula.

6. Nguyen Van Troi Bridge

  • Location: Duy Tan Street, Hoa Cuong Ward, Da Nang

Running parallel to Tran Thi Ly Bridge, Nguyen Van Troi Bridge stands as a historical relic of Da Nang. While the old railway bridge at the site of Tran Thi Ly was dismantled for new development, Nguyen Van Troi Bridge was kept intact. Its preservation serves as a tribute to the city’s rich past.

Constructed in the 1960s by the American contractor RMK, the bridge has a total length of 513.8 meters and a width of 10.5 meters. The bridge deck was initially made of wood before being replaced with reinforced concrete in 1978 and steel plates in 1996. It was the first roadway bridge in Da Nang over the Han River, playing a crucial role in military logistics during the Vietnam War, as American forces used it to transport supplies from Tien Sa Port into Da Nang. After Vietnam’s reunification, this Da Nang bridge was named after the national hero Nguyen Van Troi.

Da Nang bridges are more than just engineering marvels; they are cultural icons that define the city’s identity.
