2. Things you need to know about Hang Pagoda

Hang Pagoda offers not only a place of worship but also a beautiful blend of history and architecture. Each year, this sacred site draws thousands of travelers who are enchanted by its spiritual significance.

2.1. Legend

The story of Hang Pagoda, Vietnam begins with a woman named Le Thi Tho who, after facing many difficulties in life, turned to Buddhism for peace. She joined Tay An Pagoda and took the Buddhist name Dieu Thien. However, with so many people coming and going, Tay An Pagoda was not the quiet place she needed, so she set out to find a more secluded spot.

Her search brought her to a quiet, tree-covered cave on the western side of Sam Mountain. Here, she built a small shelter made of bamboo and leaves, marking the beginning of what is now Hang Pagoda. Nearby, there was a deep mountain cave inhabited by two large pythons. Rather than being dangerous, these pythons were gentle around her, listening to her daily recitation of Buddhist teachings. They even adopted a vegetarian diet and began protecting her from wild animals and intruders. She named them Thanh Xa (Green Python) and Bach Xa (White Python).

After Tho’s passing, the pythons mysteriously vanished. Today, the legend of Le Thi Tho and her pythons continues to bring a unique charm to Hang Pagoda.

2.2. Architecture

Hang Pagoda has a main facade of 11 meters wide and a side facade of 10 meters wide, built on a solid green stone base. Its floor is tiled, the walls are bricked with lime mortar, and the roof is covered with large tube tiles, giving it a classic look.

The pagoda is divided into two main areas. The upper area is the main hall for worshiping Buddha. The lower area includes an ancestor worship house, a smokehouse, and several small towers. Behind the main hall is a natural stone cave, which is said to be where the legendary pythons once lived. The entrance to the cave is over 2 meters tall and leads into a narrow tunnel that stretches 12 meters into the mountain.

Hang Pagoda’s structure cascades down the mountainside, with open-air bridges and paths that seem to hang on the cliff. This height, combined with the fresh mountain air, gives a peaceful and almost otherworldly feel. Throughout the pagoda, you will find unique carvings and sculptures, with Buddha statues and greenery tucked into small corners. Pots of trees and flowers line the courtyards and walkways, adding to the poetic charm of this beautiful site.

2.3. Worshiped deities

Statues of the legendary snakes, Thanh Xa and Bach Xa, stand along the walkways. Hang Pagoda has become a special place for worship, with visitors hoping that the snakes’ gentleness will bring blessings to all. Within the pagoda grounds, you will find shrines dedicated to Maitreya Buddha, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, and the Four Dharma Protectors. Buddha statues are also nestled in the pagoda’s caves and cliffs. Some statues are even placed deep within the mountain itself, adding to the sacred atmosphere of Hang Pagoda.
