Hoan Kiem Lake gets its name from a legend from the 15th century, during the Ming occupation. A fisherman named Than discovered a sacred sword in the lake and gave it to Le Loi, who led the Lam Son uprising against the Ming. 

After the victory, Le Loi sailed on the lake, where a golden turtle appeared to reclaim the sword. The turtle surfaced, and the king returned the sword, which then disappeared with the turtle. This event led to the lake being renamed Hoan Kiem, symbolizing the return of the sword to its divine guardian, the Golden Turtle.
