Afterward, the cave became a field hospital and a hidden shelter for wounded soldiers. It was also the site of heroic battles by local forces, especially the famed engagement on August 23, 1968, led by hero Phan Hiep, who was later honored with the title Hero of the People’s Armed Forces.
