1. Location of Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village

Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village lies at the base of the Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son), about 10 kilometers southeast of the city center of Da Nang. It’s also the largest traditional village that is still operating in the city, among the few that have withstood the test of time.

  • Make your way to either the Han River Bridge, the Dragon Bridge, or Tran Thi Ly Bridge, whichever is nearer to your current location.
  • No matter which bridge you are at, follow the street east until you see the beach.
  • Turn right onto Vo Nguyen Giap Street.

2. History of Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village

The origins of Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village date back to around the mid-17th century. Initially, only a few people in the village practiced the craft, creating household items such as rice mortars, stone grinders, and grave markers. It wasn’t until the early 19th century – during the Nguyen Dynasty’s construction of palaces and mausoleums – that the village gained national recognition.

Non Nuoc Village’s signature material was once marble quarried directly from the Marble Mountains. These stones were prized for their fine texture and natural colors: white, black, red, and green. However, due to environmental protection policies, quarrying in the area was banned in 1990. Since then, the artisans have sourced stone from other provinces.

To reduce noise and dust near tourist sites, workshops that handle large stone blocks have been moved about 1 kilometer away from the Marble Mountains. Final product sculpting, especially for export, still takes place within the village. Despite many ups and downs, the community’s passion for stone carving has helped Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village endure and thrive till today. In 2014, Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Many sculptures reflect influences from the Cham people of My Son Sanctuary, including iconic figures such as Yoni and Linga, Garuda birds, Apsara dancers, and Hindu deities like Indra and Nandin. At the same time, Vietnamese culture is represented through detailed carvings of dragons, turtles, and phoenixes. This dual influence gives the village’s stonework a distinct identity.
