1. Overview of the weather in Thanh Hoa

Thanh Hoa, a province in northern Vietnam, has a humid subtropical climate shaped by the monsoon winds. While northern Vietnam generally has 4 seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter), Thanh Hoa experiences two main seasons: a hot season and a cold season, each with its distinct weather patterns.

The hot season runs from late spring to mid-autumn (May – September). During this time, it is often sweltering, with temperatures sometimes reaching up to 39-40°C, especially when the hot, dry winds from Laos blow through. The heat is accompanied by frequent rainfall, which can lead to flooding at times. This rain helps keep the landscape lush.

The cold season starts in mid-autumn and lasts until mid-spring (October – March). This season brings cooler temperatures, thanks to the northeast monsoon, and much less rain. The early part of the cold season can be quite dry, and as winter sets in, temperatures can drop to as low as 5-6°C. The cooler, drier air is a welcome relief after the heat of summer, offering a more comfortable climate.

1.1. Annual temperature

The average annual temperature is about 22-23°C. In summer, temperatures can climb as high as 41°C, while in winter, especially in mountainous areas, they can drop below 2°C, sometimes bringing icy conditions.

1.2. Annual rainfall

The average annual rainfall is about 1,700 milliliters, but some mountainous areas see much higher amounts. In these areas, wind speeds tend to stay steady throughout the year, averaging 1-2 meters per second. In coastal areas, wind speeds can fluctuate, especially during the storm season from June to November.

1.3. Annual wind seasons

Thanh Hoa experiences three main wind seasons every year:

  • The Northeast Wind: This wind brings the cold air from Siberia, leading to a chilly winter.
  • The Southwest Wind: Originating from the Bay of Bengal and passing through Thailand and Laos, this wind carries hot and dry air, creating scorching summer days.
  • The Southeast Wind: This is a cool breeze that blows in from the sea, bringing a refreshing climate.

2. Features of Thanh Hoa weather by region

Because of the terrain and its interactions with neighboring areas, Thanh Hoa weather has distinct variations across the region, resulting in three unique climate zones.

2.1. The coastal area

The coastal area of Thanh Hoa enjoys a relatively mild climate due to its flat terrain and proximity to the sea. It has high temperatures, with winters that are not too cold and summers that are not too hot. Rainfall is moderate, increasing as you move from north to south, with the most rain in September and the least in February – March.

Light drizzle often occurs during the late cold season, particularly in January – March, sometimes lasting for weeks. Short dry spells can happen in May – June and again in October – November. From July to November, this area is susceptible to typhoons.

2.2. The midland area

Thanh Hoa weather in the midland area experiences moderate temperatures, with winters that are relatively cold and bring occasional light frost. Summers are warm, though the southern parts tend to be hotter due to the influence of the dry, hot winds.

This area receives substantial rainfall, especially in places like Nhu Xuan, Nhu Thanh, Lang Chanh, and Thuong Xuan. It is characterized by high humidity. These conditions can increase the risk of flash floods and landslides during July and August.

2.3. The mountainous area

The mountainous area of Thanh Hoa, including districts like Quan Hoa, Quan Son, Muong Lat, and parts of Lang Chanh and Thuong Xuan, has a distinct climate. Temperatures are generally lower here, with winters that can be quite cold. In some parts, the temperature can drop below 0°C, leading to frequent frost. Summers in this area are mild, but the risk of floods increases, particularly during July and August.
