It is not only a valuable work in the development of Vietnam, but also a celebrated symbol of the nation’s rich architectural heritage. 1. The history of Thanh Toan Bridge Hue Vietnam

According to historical records, Thanh Toan Bridge was built in 1776 by a woman of noble origin named Tran Thi Dao. Her husband was also a top official in the court at that time. After following her husband to the North, she later returned to her hometown.

In her village, there was a river that blocked people’s way to work. They had to use boats for all their transportation needs, which was inconvenient and time-consuming even on normal days, not to mention stormy days. Thus, Tran Thi Dao felt she had to do something to help the people. Driven by her innate compassion and generosity, she used her own money to build a bridge to make it easier for the villagers to cross the river. It is now Thanh Toan Bridge.

2. How to get to Thanh Toan Bridge Hue?

Thanh Toan Bridge location is in Thuy Thanh commune, Huong Thuy district, which is a suburban area about 7-8 kilometers southeast of Hue city center. 

From the city center, visitors can start their journey at To Huu street, follow the street and turn right at the end to reach the intersection with Hoang Quoc Viet street, then turn left. The bridge can be found at the end of this street. As the road is narrow, it is preferable to ride a bicycle or motorbike to best navigate and explore around.

3. Things to do at Thanh Toan Tile-Roofed Bridge

3.1. Explore the ancient beauty of Thanh Toan Bridge

Thanh Toan Bridge is a remarkable example of the roofed bridge architecture which was popular during the 17th – 18th centuries. Other iconic works that have the same design as Thanh Toan Bridge are Khuc Thoai Bridge, Phu Khe Bridge, and notably the Japanese Bridge in Hoi An.

Bridging over an 18-meter-long ditch, Thanh Toan Bridge is totally made of wood and surrounded by lush trees. The entire roof of the bridge was covered with glazed tiles – a popular kind of tiles at that time. Due to these materials, the bridge has retained its antique colors and patterns. 

On the roof, you can see a couple of dragon figures. Under the bridge is the tranquil and poetic scenery of a typical Vietnamese village, where locals catch fish from small boats and the river is adorned with floating duckweed and purple lilies.

3.3. Join the exciting festival held near Thanh Toan Bridge

Annually, when the festive season comes, the atmosphere seems to flourish all over Hue, and Thanh Toan Bridge is no exception. There is a traditional incense burning ritual to honor Tran Thi Dao, the “founder” of the bridge.
