Tho Xuan Airport is a mixed-use military and civilian airport located in Sao Vang Town, Tho Xuan District, Thanh Hoa Province, about 45 kilometers west of Thanh Hoa City. 

It is the only airport in Thanh Hoa, the first-class military airport, and the base of the 923rd Fighter-Bomber Regiment (Yen The Regiment). It began operating for civil aviation services on February 5, 2013. This marked a significant step in the development of Thanh Hoa’s transportation infrastructure, enhancing the province’s position. The airport serves as a modern transportation hub, facilitating investment, trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between Thanh Hoa, the North Central region, and Ho Chi Minh City – the nation’s economic center.

  • In 2012, Sao Vang military airport was re-planned to also serve civil aviation needs, changing its name to Tho Xuan.
  • On February 5, 2013, the first flight from Ho Chi Minh City landed at Thanh Hoa’s airport, marking a new phase of development.
  • In December 2014, the construction of a civilian terminal began, which was completed in January 2016, improving service quality.
  • In December 2018, the airport inaugurated a new operations center, highlighting its ongoing development.
  • By 2030-2050, the airport aims to become an international airport, capable of handling 20 million passengers annually.

Regarding infrastructure, the airport operates two passenger terminals:

  • The new domestic terminal covers 5,460 square meters and can serve 1,200,000 passengers per year, with a peak capacity of 600 passengers per hour.
  • The old terminal, serving both domestic and international flights, can handle 500,000 passengers per year over an area of 2,070 square meters.

The airport is equipped with a single runway measuring 3,200 meters by 50 meters, along with one taxiway, a rapid exit taxiway, five main connecting taxiways, and additional connecting taxiways. The aircraft parking area has six positions for A320 and A321 planes, along with parking for cars and comprehensive infrastructure and technical facilities. The airport uses an Instrument Landing System (ILS) for precise navigation and communication in flight operations.

  • Dining and shopping: Souvenirs, fast food, snacks, coffee, and drinks are available on the 2nd floor (Coffee Room – boarding area), Gate 2, and between the boarding area and Gate 1.
  • Free drinking water: Available 24/7 in the departure area, arrival area, and waiting rooms at Gate 1 and Gate 2.
  • Medical services: The airport’s medical team is well-trained, equipped with modern medical devices and medications, and offers 24/7 ambulance service and an emergency room, ready to handle airport emergencies effectively.

4. Information about flights from and to Thanh Hoa’s airport

At its peak, Tho Xuan Airport operated nine domestic routes, connecting Thanh Hoa with Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Da Nang, Binh Dinh, Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), Buon Ma Thuot (Dak Lak), Dalat (Lam Dong), Phu Quoc (Kien Giang), and Con Dao (Ba Ria – Vung Tau). Currently, only the Thanh Hoa – Ho Chi Minh City route remains active, served by three airlines: Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, and Bamboo Airways, with 8-10 flights per day (Vietnam Airlines 2-3 flights/day, Vietjet Air 6-8 flights/day, Bamboo Airways about 3 flights/week). Pacific Airlines only operates during peak periods like Tet.
