17/11/2025 390 views

Tucked away just 15 kilometers southwest of Da Nang’s city center, Tuy Loan Ancient Village offers a refreshing escape from the fast-paced urban buzz. With over 500 years of history, this charming village is a living museum of Vietnamese heritage.

1. Overview of Tuy Loan Ancient Village

Nestled in Hoa Vang Commune, just about 15 kilometers away from the city center of Da Nang, Tuy Loan Ancient Village is one of the oldest villages in the region, with a history spanning more than 500 years.

The name “Tuy Loan” comes from Chinese characters, where “Tuy” means intoxicated or delightful and “Loan” refers to the phoenix. True to its name, the village is known as a “land where birds gather,” attracting many ancient people to settle. Traditional crafts flourished here, from green tea planting and mat weaving to brocade weaving, and the most famous is rice paper making.

Beyond its crafts, Tuy Loan Ancient Village is also celebrated for its mi Quang (Quang noodles), a culinary treasure deeply rooted in the local culture. Unlike the energetic streets of Da Nang, the village offers a serene rural landscape. Picture winding country roads shaded by bamboo, buffalo lazily strolling home at dusk, and the calm Tuy Loan River flowing through rice fields. It’s a postcard-perfect snapshot of an authentic Vietnamese village.

2. History of Tuy Loan Ancient Village

Tuy Loan Ancient Village was established in the late 15th century during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong, specifically under the Hong Duc era (1470-1497). Historical documents show the village holding more than 20 imperial decrees from different Vietnamese dynasties, with the earliest dating back to the reign of King Minh Mang in 1826 and the latest from King Khai Dinh in 1924.

According to elders, early settlers chose this area for its fertile land and natural beauty. The village was initially named “Thuy Loan,” which over time evolved into the current name, “Tuy Loan,” due to dialectal changes. During Vietnam’s resistance wars, Tuy Loan Ancient Village played a crucial role as a local revolutionary hub, housing military troops and supporting the resistance in the area.

3.1. Visit Tuy Loan Communal House

One of the village’s iconic sites is Tuy Loan Communal House, built in the late 18th century and recognized as a national heritage site in 1999. Spanning over 100m² within an 8,000m² compound, the communal house features a unique hybrid structure that combines beam frame rafter systems. Outside, there is an ornate screen wall decorated with porcelain mosaics – one side embossed with a dragon-horse, the other with a kylin. Inside, the space is divided into three compartments and two side wings, supported by large wooden pillars and intricately connected by beams and rafters in a traditional design.

To the east of the house stands a small shrine honoring the village’s founding families: Dang, Lam, Nguyen, Tran, and Le. The house also preserves an impressive collection of relics, including 25 imperial decrees issued by Nguyen Dynasty kings, a stele dating back to the first year of King Thanh Thai (1889), and various calligraphy boards and couplets over a century old.

3.2. Enjoy the village festival

The Tuy Loan Ancient Village Festival, celebrated annually on the 9th and 10th day of the 1st lunar month, is a vibrant blend of tradition and joy. Held at the communal house, the festival kicks off with solemn rituals, including the procession of sacred objects and offerings to the village deities. Once the rituals conclude, the atmosphere shifts to one of excitement, with folk activities such as noodle-making, rice paper grilling, and cake wrapping. There are also boat races, martial arts displays, and traditional music performances on the Tuy Loan River.

3.3. Explore Tuy Loan Market

A trip to Tuy Loan Ancient Village is incomplete without visiting Tuy Loan Market. Just a short walk away from the communal house, this rustic market is a bustling hub of local life. Here, you will find a treasure trove of regional products: seafood from Hoi An, forest goods from Tay Giang, handmade mats and baskets from Cam Ne, and fresh farm produce. This is also a great place to observe the traditional noodle-making process and pick up souvenirs.

3.4. Learn the craft of traditional rice paper making

Tuy Loan is famous for its traditional rice paper (“banh trang”), a unique delicacy that has been crafted by local families for generations. What sets Tuy Loan rice paper apart is the special blend of five essential ingredients: fish sauce, salt, sugar, sesame, and either garlic or ginger. This recipe is key to the rice paper’s distinctive flavor.

The process of making rice paper begins with soaking and grinding the rice, after which the batter is spread onto bamboo mats and gently steamed. Unlike other regions where rice paper is sun-dried, in Tuy Loan, the rice paper is carefully dried over hot embers. This method, which involves turning the rice paper several times until it reaches a golden color and a fragrant aroma, ensures it retains its delicate texture and unique flavor.

Each piece of rice paper typically measures around 30 cm in diameter and is coated with white sesame seeds for an added crunch. The finished rice paper is both thin and firm, ideal for making rolls or serving with various dishes. They are sold in bundles of 10 sheets for around 220,000 – 270,000 VND.

Visitors to Tuy Loan Ancient Village can watch the artisans skillfully creating this traditional food and even try their hand at making their own rice paper, offering a hands-on cultural experience.

3.5. Savor a delicious bowl of mi Quang

You have not truly experienced Tuy Loan Ancient Village until you have tasted its signature dish: mi Quang (Quang noodles). Here, mi Quang is an explosion of textures and flavors – turmeric-yellow noodles, savory broth, pork, shrimp, quail eggs, crushed peanuts, and fresh herbs. It is topped off with crispy rice crackers for extra crunch.
