1. Where is Van Son Pagoda? How to get there?
Van Son Pagoda (Van Son Tu), or Nui Mot Pagoda, is perched halfway up Nui Mot Mountain, about 1.6 kilometers from the center of Con Son Town, in Con Dao Island, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. The pagoda boasts an exceptional location: backed by the mountain and facing Con Son Bay, Con Dao Town, and An Hai Lotus Pond. After numerous renovations, Van Son Tu has become a must-visit destination for all who come to Con Dao. It’s no surprise that visitors regard it as “the most beautiful pagoda in Vietnam.”
To reach Van Son Pagoda, you can refer to the following route: Starting from the pier in Con Dao, head southeast toward Phan Chu Trinh Street. Turn onto Vu Van Hieu Street, then take a right onto Nguyen Duc Thuan Street. Continue along this road to Ben Dam Street. After that, turn right and walk about 300 meters, and your destination will be on the left.

2. Things to know about Van Son Pagoda in Con Dao
Have you ever wondered why Van Son Pagoda is an unmissable destination in Con Dao? Read on to learn more about this stunning attraction.
2.1. History
Van Son Pagoda was constructed in 1964 during the U.S. administration to serve the spiritual needs of officials and soldiers on the island while also diverting attention from the brutal treatment of prisoners. In 1965, lifelong prisoners from Phu Hai Prison were forced to carry construction materials up Nui Mot Mountain, enduring severe hardships. Many died from torture and were buried at Hang Duong Cemetery.
After 1975, when Con Dao was liberated, the pagoda became a Buddhist site for the local community. Over the years, it has been restored and is now a cultural and historical landmark, a place for prayer and remembrance of the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

2.2. Architecture
The pagoda boasts a unique Eastern Buddhist architectural style, dedicated to Buddha and various Bodhisattvas. Although the pagoda has a modest size, its location, nestled against Nui Mot Mountain, offers breathtaking panoramic views on every side, making it one of the most stunning spots in Vietnam.
Built in the “Tam” style, the pagoda follows Zen architecture from the Truc Lam Yen Tu sect. The main hall sits at the center, with the ancestral hall behind and the bell and drum towers on either side. In front is the gong pavilion. Crafted from precious wood, the two-tiered roof is covered with thatched tiles, and the curved corners resemble swirling clouds, amplifying the bell’s ethereal sound.
Like other Truc Lam sect temples, this pagoda features Vietnamese inscriptions, plaques, and couplets that embody a unique Buddhist philosophy, captivating visitors and drawing them back repeatedly. The highlight is a 2-meter statue of Avalokitesvara (Quan Am Bodhisattva) standing gracefully on a lotus pedestal, holding a vase of nectar. The temple is further distinguished by its intricate carvings, massive wooden columns, and fine craftsmanship, all of which contribute to its remarkable beauty.
