Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of Vietnam’s “Four Great Passes,” is famous for its breathtaking scenery. Visitors will not only enjoy the majestic views but also have a chance to experience the local life.

1. Overview of Ma Pi Leng Pass

Ma Pi Leng Pass is located on National Road 4C, spanning the communes of Pai Lung and Pa Vi in Meo Vac District, Ha Giang Province. It sits at an altitude of 1,200 meters within the UNESCO-recognized Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark. This challenging mountain pass spans about 20 kilometers, crossing the Ma Pi Leng peak. The name “Ma Pi Leng,” meaning “horse’s nose” in the Hmong language, symbolizes the pass’s rugged, steep terrain.

In 2009, Ma Pi Leng was recognized as a national scenic site. It encompasses Nho Que River Canyon and Ma Pi Leng Pass, holding remarkable geological values and offering some of the country’s most stunning panoramic views. Beyond natural beauty, the pass represents the determination of thousands of young Vietnamese volunteers from 16 ethnic groups who carved it through the cliffs between 1959 and 1965.

2. Best time to visit Ma Pi Leng Pass in Ha Giang

Ha Giang is beautiful year-round, with each season bringing a unique charm. Thus, visitors can explore this legendary pass and the entirety of Ha Giang anytime. Highlighted times include January – March for cherry and plum blossoms, April for Khau Vai Love Market, September for golden rice fields, October – November for buckwheat flowers, and December for canola blooms.

3. Top things to do on your journey to Ma Pi Leng Pass

3.1. Admire the picturesque scenery along the pass

The first reason to visit Ma Pi Leng in Ha Giang is the chance to witness its awe-inspiring natural scenery. As you travel along the winding mountain road, you will see towering, jagged rocky cliffs contrasted by the tranquil, emerald Nho Que River flowing gently below. You may encounter Hmong locals walking along the pass or small roadside stalls where you can get a glimpse of the local life.

You can also stop to check out houses decorated with murals depicting the landscapes of Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark on your way up the pass. From the summit, you will gaze over the breathtaking scenery of the Nho Que River and Tu San Canyon, with layers of limestone rock formations dotted with villages clinging to the mountainside.

3.2. Take a boat ride through Tu San Canyon

Another must-try experience on the Ma Pi Leng Pass map is taking a boat ride on the Nho Que River to admire Tu San Canyon. Known as the deepest canyon in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, Tu San Canyon features towering cliffs up to 800 meters tall, spanning 1.7 kilometers in length and nearly 1 kilometer in depth. Enclosed by high cliffs with serene waters below, this canyon evokes a peaceful, almost otherworldly atmosphere with fresh air. Tu San Canyon also holds geological significance, dating back more than 200 million years with fossils and tectonic formations.

To reach Tu San Canyon, at the base of Ma Pi Leng Pass, travelers will descend toward Ta Lang Village. This route is challenging, with over 50 sharp bends and steep slopes, as well as a 2-kilometer hike up a steep, narrow trail. At the dock, visitors can take a boat to explore the Nho Que River and Tu San Canyon. The 20-minute boat ride to the canyon costs 120,000 VND per person.

3.3. Camp on the white cliffs

For adventurers, camping overnight on the white cliffs is an unforgettable experience. Located halfway up a mountain at over 1,700 meters, the path to the white cliffs follows a 5-kilometer-long pass that runs parallel to Ma Pi Leng Pass. The first 3 kilometers can be traveled by motorbike, while the remaining 2 require a steep hike along a narrow path. Camping here allows you to see the Nho Que River and Tu San Canyon in the soft light of dawn or dusk, watch the clouds drift over the villages below, and appreciate the rugged beauty of the highlands.

For a safe and enjoyable camping experience, visitors should:

  • Avoid climbing the railings for photos
  • Move at a steady pace and wear shoes with good grip
  • Pack light to avoid fatigue on the hike
  • Wear comfortable clothing for hiking
  • Bring warm clothes, a tent, and personal hygiene items
  • Carry a mat, blanket, or sleeping pad since the ground is rocky
  • Bring water and food as there are no nearby stores
  • Clean up after camping
  • Visit during clear weather, avoiding rainy or foggy days. The ideal times for camping are from August to November and from March to May.
