Hang Va Cave

Hang Va Cave, Quang Binh: A must-visit for nature explorers

15/07/2025 219 views

Hang Va Cave offers one of Phong Nha’s most thrilling and challenging underground adventures. Known for rugged terrain, narrow passages, and stunning beauty, it brings an unforgettable experience for those who love exploration and excitement.

1. Where is Hang Va Cave? How to get there?

Hang Va is a cave located in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, Quang Tri Province (formerly Quang Binh Province). It is just over 50 meters away from the back entrance of Son Doong, the largest cave in the world. It is about 4 kilometers away from kilometer 28 of the western branch of Ho Chi Minh Road. It is considered one of the most unique caves in the national park thanks to its rare formations and hidden location.

Here is a quick guide on how to get to Hang Va Cave from Phong Nha:

1. Head north toward Provincial Road 20 (DT20)
2. Turn right onto Provincial Road 20
3. Turn left at the monument of the Ho Chi Minh Trail National Historic Site, onto National Road 15 (QL15)

The journey takes about 37 minutes and covers 21.6 kilometers.

2. How was Hang Va Cave discovered?

Hang Va Cave was first discovered in 1992 by a local named Ho Khanh. He later reported it to the British-Vietnamese Caving Exploration Team during their expedition in 2010 to find the back entrance of Son Doong Cave. At that time, the team did not have enough time to explore Hang Va Cave fully. They returned in 2012 to survey and measure it. The name “Hang Va” comes from the surrounding forest called “Rung Va.” The exact origin of the name remains a mystery today.

3. What to experience inside Hang Va Cave?

3.1. Admire magnificent stalactites

Among the many caves in Quang Binh, Hang Va Cave is one of the most unique because of its stalactite formations. Experts say the cave features a type of cone-shaped stalactite that is not found in any other cave within Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. There are said to be about 1,000 of these stalactites in Hang Va Cave. They grow in rimstone pools, which are natural pools created by mineral deposits. The cones can reach up to 2 meters in height. Many of them are level with each other, matching the rims of the pools where they formed.

Although these cones are made from calcium carbonate like typical stalactites, their shape and size make them very rare. A thin layer of soft mud covers them, but when this layer is cleaned off, a complex structure is revealed underneath.

3.2. Explore underground waterfalls and pools

After the rainy season, rainwater seeps into the ground and flows through underground streams, finding its way into the cave through cracks in the rock. This natural flow creates beautiful waterfalls deep beneath the surface.

Hang Va Cave also features several underground pools. To explore the cave, tourists need to swim or walk through the water. The water is crystal-clear but very cold. In some areas, the currents are strong and fast.

3.3. Explore rich flora and fauna

The valley in Hang Va Cave is narrow and surrounded by dense limestone mountains. These mountains are covered with a wide variety of plant life. Because the valley is narrow, many trees here grow tall and slender as they stretch toward the light. You will also find scattered shrubs growing along the base of the cliffs.

Thanks to this diverse plant life, the campsite near Hang Va Cave is often visited by birds, flying squirrels, civets, and snakes. On the cliffs, it is common to see monkeys, douc langurs, and even rock macaques. In the nearby Khe Van Valley, wild boars and mountain goats roam the forest.

3.4. Stop by Nuoc Nut Cave

Connected to Hang Va Cave is Nuoc Nut Cave, which is estimated to be around 2 million years old and stretches around 2.2 kilometers. Experts believe Nuoc Nut Cave, found in 2003, was formed by underground rivers flowing from both Son Doong Cave and Hang Va Cave. Inside, the cave’s terrain forms natural chambers that look like tiny terraced fields. Since Hang Va and Nuoc Nut are connected, exploring both caves together makes for a complete adventure.
