Thac Ba Lake is located in the districts of Luc Yen and Yen Binh in the former Yen Bai Province (now part of Lao Cai Province), Northwest Vietnam. It was formed in 1971 after the completion of Thac Ba Hydropower Plant – the first hydropower plant in Vietnam, when the Chay River was dammed, giving rise to a vast water surface dotted with more than 1,300 islets. Covering a total area of over 23,400 hectares, the lake holds between 3 and 3.9 billion cubic meters of water. Its width ranges from 10 to 15 kilometers and its depth reaches 60 meters, making it a vital water source for the region.

With its emerald water, dramatic limestone formations, and mysterious caves, Thac Ba Lake was officially recognized as a National Historical and Scenic Site in September 1996.
