2.3. Vietnam population by gender and by age in 2021

Vietnam ranks third globally in sex ratio imbalance, with one of the highest rates behind only China and India.

In 2021, the sex ratio of the Vietnamese population was 99.4 males for every 100 females. In urban areas, the sex ratio was 97.7 males per 100 females, while in rural areas, it was 100.4 males per 100 females.

The sex ratio at birth in Vietnam was 112 males for every 100 females. The urban areas had a higher sex ratio at birth, of 123.7 males per 100 females, while rural areas had a lower sex ratio at birth of 109.2 males per 100 females.

The fundamental cause of gender imbalance at birth in Vietnam is the cultural belief that having a son is necessary to continue the family line and worship ancestors. Additionally, modern technology allows them to find out the gender of the fetus early on, and with the easy availability of sex-selective abortion, the number of male births has become much higher than female births
