2. A glance at the history of An Sinh Temple

An Sinh has long been regarded as the ancestral homeland of the Tran Dynasty emperors. Back in 1237, Emperor Tran Thai Tong bestowed the ancient land of An Sinh upon his brother, Prince Tran Lieu. Charged with tending ancestral tombs and preserving royal rites, the Prince established Phu De (his residence) and a group of shrines and pavilions. Fast forward to 1381, An Sinh Temple was completed, dedicated to five Tran emperors as the embodiment of the family’s enduring legacy.

Through the centuries, it weathered wars, dynastic changes, and even a detour into education. Between 1958 and 1975, it became a haven for Southern students evacuated north during the Second Indochina War, later becoming part of Quang Ninh’s teacher training college. Then, between 1997 and 2000, local artisans and historians came together to restore the temple atop layers of past renovations, which finally takes us to today. An Sinh Temple now honors eight emperors alongside An Sinh Vuong Tran Lieu, his wife Thien Dao Quoc Mau, and the revered general Hung Dao Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan.

3. Things to explore at An Sinh Temple, Quang Ninh

3.1. Green surroundings

Blessed with its position on a gentle hill with the mist‑shrouded Yen Tu range arching in the distance, An Sinh Temple feels like a hidden oasis amid rice paddies and village rooftops. Originally built in 1381 to honor five Tran emperors, the layout of the temple consisted of 3 main areas: “bai duong” is the main hall dedicated to common activities, “hau cung” is the back hall reserved for altars and usually the most sacred and important place in the layout, and finally “ong muong” – the area bridging the gap between the two other parallel halls.

Then, the Nguyen-era rebuild expanded the worship to eight monarchs and added small shrines for the Queen Mother and Confucius. Today, the temple is also dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao, God of the Mountain, God of the Land, and other deities in folk religious beliefs.

Stepping through the gate of An Sinh Temple, you will see its graceful, symmetrical layout with two parallel halls joined by one in the middle, the original structure back in its early days. An Sinh Temple today covers an area of over 1,000 square meters. Its architectural layout reverts to its original  “工” shape, but now consists of a five-compartment front hall, a central ceremonial hall, and a rear sanctuary with five compartments and two side wings. The temple is built with a two-tiered, eight-roof structure, featuring traditional Vietnamese truss systems such as stacked beams and dougong brackets.

Beyond its timber and tile, An Sinh Temple doubles as a figurative museum. Decades of archaeological work have unearthed column bases, roof tiles, tower fragments, bowls, plates, and more from the Tran, Revival Le Dynasty, and Nguyen dynasties.
