1. Where is Ba Vang Pagoda? How to get there?

Ba Vang Pagoda is situated in Quang Trung Ward, Uong Bi City, Quang Ninh Province. Also known as Bao Quang Pagoda, it is one of the most renowned Vietnamese pagodas

Perched on the slopes of Thanh Dang Mountain, the pagoda is surrounded by majestic mountain ranges. To the left, the Thanh Long Mountains overlap, while the Bach Ho Mountains descend on the right. In front, the meandering Bach Dang River adds to the picturesque setting, with views of Hai Phong Port and the vast waves of Do Son Beach in the distance.

The pagoda offers free entrance, and no commercial activities are allowed within its premises. All services provided are complimentary.

To reach Ba Vang Pagoda, you can consider the following transportation options:

  • By bus: From the center of Hanoi, it takes approximately 130 kilometers to reach Ba Vang Pagoda by bus, with a travel time of 2 to 3 hours. You can go to bus stations such as My Dinh, Gia Lam, or Giap Bat in Hanoi, where you can find Hanoi – Uong Bi bus routes. The ticket prices range from 90,000 to 100,000 VND per ticket. Upon arriving in Uong Bi, you can take a taxi for around 50,000 VND to reach Ba Vang Pagoda.
  • By private vehicle: If you are traveling by private vehicle, the route starts at Chuong Duong Bridge, then continues on Nguyen Van Cu Street, and further on to Bac Ninh. From there, you can follow National Highway 18, which passes through Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, and Quang Ninh provinces, until you reach Ba Vang Pagoda.

2. Things to know about the history of Ba Vang Pagoda

2.1. The formation of Ba Vang Pagoda

The exact historical details regarding the establishment of Ba Vang Pagoda remain unclear. However, the discovery of ceramic tiles adorned with intricate patterns and motifs in the 1980s provides evidence that the pagoda dates back to the 13th century, during the Tran Dynasty. This period coincided with King Tran Nhan Tong’s visit to Yen Tu and the founding of the Truc Lam Zen sect.

2.2. The development of Ba Vang Pagoda

The growth of Ba Vang Pagoda can be traced through four phases of renovation. The first renovation took place in 1706, marking the revival of the Truc Lam Yen Tu Buddhist lineage after a three-century hiatus. Unfortunately, due to wars and natural disasters, the pagoda gradually fell into disrepair. In 1988, the town of Uong Bi initiated the reconstruction of the pagoda using wood.

By 1993, the pagoda had significantly deteriorated. To preserve its heritage, Uong Bi City undertook a comprehensive renovation using bricks and cement, expanding the total area to 95 square meters.

In 2007, Venerable Thich Truc Thai Minh became the abbot of Ba Vang Pagoda. Recognizing the need for improved facilities, the pagoda underwent its most extensive renovation in January 2011. The inauguration of the pagoda took place in 2014, earning it recognition as the “Mountain Pagoda with the Largest Main Hall in Indochina.”

Today, Ba Vang Pagoda Vietnam stands as a revered spiritual destination, attracting thousands of devoted Buddhist followers who gather for spiritual practices that nourish the soul.

This hall serves as a place of worship, where visitors come to offer incense, recite sacred texts, and engage in spiritual practices. Spanning two floors, the Main Hall covers an impressive area of 4,767 square meters and stands at a height of 28.42 meters.

The main hall beautifully combines traditional Vietnamese monastic design with modern spaciousness. Its upper walls showcase 37 relief paintings that depict significant events from the Buddha’s life, offering profound insights into his enlightened teachings.

4.7. The statues

Ba Vang Pagoda Vietnam boasts a collection of statues, with the two most notable ones being:

  • The Statue of Quan The Am Bodhisattva: This statue stands upon a lotus platform. It is considered one of the largest solid stone statues in Vietnam, measuring an impressive 10 meters in height and weighing nearly 50 tons. Meticulously carved from granite, this statue shines eternally after being polished.
  • The Buddha’s Birth Statue: This statue portrays the Buddha with one hand pointing to the sky and the other to the earth, standing atop the nine-dragon platform. The combination of the lotus platform’s jade green color, the pagoda roof’s red hue, and the awe-inspiring natural scenery creates a sacred and enchanting scene.

4.8. The godly well

Nestled within the pagoda grounds lies a 300-year-old well known as the godly well. This well is famous for its pure water, with the water level typically around 2 meters. According to legend, drinking water from this well on New Year’s Eve brings good health and offers relief from various ailments. Consequently, Buddhist devotees and tourists from far and wide flock to this site, seeking a sip from its reputedly beneficial waters.
