1. Where is Bai Chay Bridge?

Bai Chay Bridge links the areas of Hon Gai and Bai Chay and greatly enhances traffic flow within Ha Long. It also connects the entire National Road 18, a vital part of the Hanoi – Hai Phong – Quang Ninh economic triangle. This strategic bridge has significantly contributed to the economic and social development of the northeastern region of Vietnam.

2. What is Bai Chay Bridge famous for?

2.1. Large scale

Bai Chay Bridge is renowned for its impressive scale and engineering feats. The construction of this landmark began on May 18, 2003, funded by Japanese ODA. It was officially inaugurated on December 2, 2006. The construction process was extensive, taking over a decade to complete. The challenging natural conditions, including geology, hydrology, and other environmental factors, coupled with high technical and financial demands, contributed to the lengthy construction period.

2.2. Impressive architecture

Bai Chay Bridge stands out not only for its grand scale but also for its sophisticated design. Spanning 903 meters in total, this cable-stayed bridge features a central span of 435 meters, setting a world record among single-plane cable-stayed bridges with prestressed concrete. Its architectural elegance is highlighted by the slender, graceful lines of its structure, which harmoniously complement the scenic backdrop of Ha Long Bay.

Bai Chay Bridge comprises six spans: one approach span, two anchor spans, two side spans, and one main span. The cables are arranged in a single plane, supporting the massive 25.3-meter-wide deck, which accommodates four lanes of traffic and two lanes for non-motorized vehicles. The two 90-meter-tall towers, supported by large caissons and Shinso piles, rise above the bridge. This design ensures that the bridge can withstand earthquakes, typhoons, and varying temperatures.

This combination of functional engineering and aesthetic beauty makes Bai Chay Bridge a significant architectural achievement.
