Binh Thuy Ancient House, also known as Binh Thuy Old House or Binh Thuy Orchid Garden, is over 100 years old. It is located at 144 Bui Huu Nghia Street, Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City, just a few minutes away from the downtown. It is also part of Long Tuyen Ancient Village.

The house is open to visitors from 8 AM to 4 PM. The entrance fee is free if you are only strolling around the exterior. However, to explore the interior, there is a fee of 15,000 VND, and you must ask the owner for permission. Although the house is a national heritage site, it remains under the management of the Duong family.

In the late 18th century, the southwestern region of the Can Tho River was a fertile and peaceful land where many people settled, including the Duong family. In 1870, Duong Van Vi, the third generation of the family, built a spacious home for his family and to honor his ancestors. Thirty years later, with growing prosperity, he decided to redesign and build a more impressive house – Binh Thuy Ancient House. 

The construction of the ancient house began under the time of Duong Van Vi. When he passed away in 1904, his youngest son, Duong Chan Ky, continued the project, which was finally completed in 1911. The house became a regional attraction for its architectural artistry.

Over its 100-year history, Binh Thuy Ancient House in Can Tho has maintained its distinctive features, drawing the attention of tourists passionate about cultural design. The house has served as the backdrop for several films, including The Horizon Over There, The Hundred-Knot Bamboo Tree, The Poor Children, The Beauty of Tay Do, Paths of Alluvium, and notably, The Lover by French director Jean-Jacques Annaud.

2.1. Stunning architecture

Reputed as the most beautiful ancient house in the Mekong Delta, Binh Thuy Old House is set on a 6,000-square-meter plot and has a striking architectural layout. The house has five main sections across its 22-meter width and three layers of depth, including a front, middle, and back area extending 16 meters deep. It features brick walls, a wooden framework, and a three-layer tiled roof, which keeps the house bright and airy. 

Surrounded by a large garden with various plants like areca, pine, ferns, and orchids, Binh Thuy Ancient House also has a 4-meter-tall rock formation in a fish pond that serves both decorative and feng shui purposes. The outdoor area includes a shrine for the Earth deity, a side gate with traditional East Asian architecture, and a pavilion with a distinctive fish-scale tiled roof. Western architectural influences are evident in the intricate Greco-Roman motifs on the house’s columns and the elaborate ironwork on the verandas.

Inside, Binh Thuy Ancient House is a skillful blend of Eastern and Western design influences. The five front rooms are of a European style, with French windows, arches, detailed carvings on the faux ceilings, French floor tiles, and chandeliers. The next five rooms serve as the family’s living quarters and ancestral worship area, furnished with traditional Vietnamese items like wooden ancestral tables and furniture. These furnishings depict familiar motifs of the Mekong Delta like bamboo, pine, lotus, birds, and peacocks. Walking through the red curtain near the altar leads to the rear section of the house, which serves as the family’s living quarter.

2.2. Invaluable artifacts

In addition to its architectural charm, Binh Thuy Ancient House is also home to a rich collection of antiques, both historically and aesthetically significant. Notable items include a marble table set from Yunnan (China), a salon set dating back to the reign of Louis XV (France), and porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties (China). Other antiques include a variety of furniture, lavabos, a phonograph from France, and four 18th-century French street lamps. The Duong family has also preserved many ancient bowls, plates, and vases, including a 572-year-old bowl from the Ming dynasty, a 533-year-old vase, and an ancient bronze incense burner.

Binh Thuy Ancient House is only about 14 kilometers away from Cai Rang Floating Market, one of Can Tho’s top attractions. From the market, follow this route: Vo Tanh Street – Nguyen Viet Dung Street – Pham Hung Street – Cai Rang Bridge – Road 3/2 – Mau Than Street – Vo Van Kiet Street – Road DT918. The house will be on your left.
