The name “Con Son” comes from the numerous “son” trees (commonly known as wax trees) that once thrived here, which provided resin for gilding. As this industry declined, the locals shifted to fish farming and fruit cultivation.

2. The best time to visit Con Son Islet

Can Tho has a mild climate with warm sunshine. Thus, the pleasant weather in Con Son makes it an enchanting destination year-round. Still, the best time to visit is from April to July, when the fruit orchards burst with longans, rambutans, pomelos, and guavas. They create a picturesque landscape and offer visitors a chance to savor the seasonal freshness.

3. Highlights of Con Son Islet

3.1. Tropical fruit gardens

Con Son Islet is famous for its tropical fruit orchards. Here, nearly every household grows seasonal fruits like guavas, mangoes, longans, plums, strawberries, rambutans, milk apples, and durians. Entry to the orchards costs about 60,000 VND, which includes the fee for picking and tasting the fruits.

Although each orchard is small, they offer diverse fruits throughout the year. For example, Mr. Ba Binh’s orchard has rambutans in May, while Mr. Tam’s orchard will have its harvest shortly after. Longan lovers can enjoy various types of longans at different times of the year from various orchards, such as Nam Minh’s in March, then Thanh Tam’s, Sau Canh’s, and Cong Minh’s in summer.

3.2. Fish farms

Con Son Islet also features several fish farms, which thrive thanks to the favorable weather and local expertise. There are almost a dozen fish farms here, all run by the locals with their traditional aquaculture practices.

Bay Bon Fish Farm, founded by Mr. Ly Van Bon, has welcomed visitors since June 2015. The farm showcases a variety of freshwater fish, including zig-zag eel, redtail catfish, black sharkminnow, fire eel, and koi fish. Here, tourists get the chance to:

Con Son Islet offers a unique dining experience known as the “flying menu,” a highlight of its community-based tourism. Visitors can choose to have meals at any of the 30 participating households. Each family contributes a dish they specialize in, such as shredded chicken with pomelo from Phuong My, grilled fish wrapped in lotus leaves from Song Khanh, river crab hotpot from Nam Phuoc, and grilled pepper snail from Chin Nho. This “community meal” concept allows visitors to savor a diverse array of flavors, fostering connections between them and the locals.

3.5. Religious festival

Con Son’s spiritual culture is marked by the nearly 100-year-old Ba Chua Xu Temple, a temple dedicated to the local deity believed to protect those who work on the river and safeguard the land. Every year, on the 9th and 10th of the 2nd lunar month, a vibrant festival is held in her honor. Visitors to Con Son Islet during this time can join the locals in a lively celebration.

Con Son Islet is just 1 kilometer away from the mainland, requiring a short 10-minute boat ride. From Ninh Kieu Wharf, follow Nguyen Trai Street to Nguyen Trai Bridge, then follow Cach Mang Thang 8 Street to Binh Thuy Bridge. Turn onto Le Hong Phong Street, go to the intersection with Dang Van Day Street, and turn right to Co Bac Ferry Terminal.
