1.1. History

Dong Hoi Airport was built by the French in the 1930s for both military and civilian purposes. During World War II, the Japanese took over but did not use it militarily. After 1945, the French redeveloped it as a civilian airport with flights to Hue and Saigon. After 1945, the airport fell into disuse. In the Second Indochina War, it was heavily bombed.

After decades of abandonment, restoration of the airport began in 2004. It was officially reopened in 2008. Since then, it expanded, was upgraded to handle Airbus aircraft, and introduced international flights in 2017. Today, Dong Hoi Airport plays a vital role in Quang Binh’s economic development.

1.2. Facilities

Dong Hoi Airport meets ICAO’s 4C standards, featuring a 2,400-meter-long, 45-meter-wide runway. Its infrastructure is capable of handling Airbus A320, Airbus A321, and other similar-sized aircraft. The apron currently provides four parking stands.

The terminal has a capacity of approximately 500,000 passengers per year. The building spans two floors with a total area of 4,282m² and offers a full range of services.

  • The first floor (2,817m²) has a check-in area, waiting area, security screening area, retail counters, cafes, a medical station, and administrative offices.
  • The second floor (1,465m²) has a departure lounge, additional retail counters, and a business-class waiting area.

A new milestone was marked on March 31, 2025 when Vietjet Air began operating charter flights between Dong Hoi Airport (VDH) and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in Taipei. According to Dong Hoi Airport news, this service includes a total of 26 flights (13 round trips) scheduled between March 31 and October 13 in 2025.
