1. The origin of the name “Eight Ladies Cave”
Nestled at kilometer 16 on Road 20 – Quyet Thang in Tan Trach Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Eight Ladies Cave, also known as the cave of the eight Youth Volunteers, is a poignant reminder of the past. This site, a crucial “fire coordinate” during the intense years (1971 to 1972) of Vietnam’s resistance war against America, holds deep historical and spiritual significance.
The cave, 20 meters deep and 10 meters wide, served as a shelter for soldiers and youth volunteers during the war. According to historical records, there was a liaison station next to the cave, where eight people would take turns at each shift. The arrival of eight young women, with their gentle and dedicated spirit for national liberation, brought a new atmosphere to the battlefield, leading to the cave being named Eight Ladies Cave.

2. The tragic history related to Eight Ladies Cave
On November 14, 1972, during a mission to fill bomb craters, American planes attacked, forcing eight Youth Volunteers (four men and four women, aged 18 to 37) to seek shelter in a nearby cave. The intense bombings shook the area, sealing the cave’s entrance with a massive rock.
Despite the efforts of nearby units to rescue them, the rock proved immovable. They could only provide water and dry food through a small opening. After nine days, the cries for help from inside the cave ceased, marking a tragic end for the trapped volunteers.

3. The spiritual stories related to number 8 at Eight Ladies Cave
There are some incredible stories related to the number 8 at this spiritual cave. For example, there were 8 tanks and trucks used in the fight against the Americans in 1972 on this road. A guide mentioned that a pair of magpie robins has consistently laid eight eggs each year at the shrine’s lantern post.
Additionally, a wild banana tree at the cave’s entrance regularly produces clusters of eight bananas before falling, and a new one grows in its place. Another story involves a pair of geckos that lay exactly 8 eggs before stopping.
Even more astonishingly, on the night before the 50th anniversary of the Eight Ladies Cave sacrifices (November 14, 1972 – November 14, 2022), as people solemnly remembered the fallen heroes, the sound of geckos calling out exactly eight times before stopping left everyone in awe.
