Fighting Cocks Islet

Fighting Cocks Islet: An iconic attraction of Ha Long Bay

12/03/2025 493 views

Fighting Cocks Islet (also known as Trong Mai Islet or Ga Choi Island) is one of the most famous natural attractions in Ha Long Bay, drawing visitors with its unique shape and legend. Resembling a pair of chickens facing each other, this iconic rock formation has stood for thousands of years, shaped by the forces of nature.

1. A glance at Fighting Cocks Islet (Trong Mai Islet)

1.1. Location

Fighting Cocks Islet is located in the southwest of Ha Long Bay, about 5 kilometers away from Bai Chay Tourist Wharf, 5 kilometers away from Tuan Chau International Port, and 7 kilometers away from Ha Long International Port. The islet gets its name from its unique shape – two large rock formations, each about 12 meters high, facing each other and resembling a pair of roosters.

1.2. Legend

No one knows exactly when Fighting Cocks Islet appeared. According to an old Vietnamese legend, it is linked to the mythical origins of Ha Long in Quang Ninh. When Vietnamese people first established the country, a dragon and her offspring descended to help them fight off invaders. After the battle, the dragons stayed.

As time passed, seeing that they did not return, the Jade Emperor sent two roosters to wake them up. However, he mistakenly sent a rooster and a hen. Enchanted by the breathtaking landscapes of Ha Long, the pair became so immersed in their surroundings and each other that they forgot their mission. Eventually, they turned to stone without even realizing it.

From then on, Fighting Cocks Islet has stood as a symbol of love, unity, and the longing for happiness, a story beautifully woven into the heart of Ha Long Bay.

2. The beauty of Fighting Cocks Islet

Fighting Cocks Islet is one of the most iconic symbols of Ha Long Bay, captivating visitors with its dramatic beauty. Rising from the emerald waters, the islet consists of two massive rocks resembling a rooster and a hen facing each other. Its charm is most striking at sunrise and sunset, when the golden light reflects off the water and creates a breathtaking scene.

Over thousands of years, Fighting Cocks Islet has been sculpted by nature’s forces, standing firm against the relentless waves and winds. During high tide, it appears to float above the water. During low tide, its delicate base becomes visible. The contrast between its imposing upper part and seemingly fragile foundation adds to its mystique, making it a favorite subject for photographers.
