The name “Lung Cu” carries various interpretations. One theory suggests it derives from “Long Cu” – meaning “the dragon’s abode,” which was inspired by a Hmong legend. According to this legend, a dragon descended from the heavens and saw the people of Lung Cu suffering from droughts. Out of compassion, the dragon left behind its eyes, which became two ever-flowing water reservoirs and saved the community from thirst. The mountain between these two lakes is called the “Dragon Mountain” (Long Son).

Another theory traces the name to “Long Co,” referencing a large bronze drum inscribed with two dragons facing the sun. The drum was placed at the base of the Dragon Mountain by Emperor Quang Trung after his victory over the Qing Dynasty. This drum was used to assert national sovereignty by resounding its beats across the border.

The average annual temperature in Lung Cu is around 18°C. Due to the high altitude, the temperatures can drop below 14°C. The area has a notably long winter which can last 8-9 months. It rarely experiences a true warm season. The coldest period is from December to February, when temperatures are at their lowest.

Summers in Lung Cu are brief, lasting only 2-3 months (May – July) with temperatures averaging between 19°C and 23°C. At higher elevations, it can still dip below 19°C. For visitors, the best time to visit Lung Cu is during these short summer months, when the weather is milder and more ideal for exploration.

Lung Cu Fair Market is held once a week, located about 500 meters away from Lung Cu Flag Tower. Primarily serving the local ethnic groups, including the Lo Lo and Hmong, this market comes alive as people from neighboring communes gather to trade. Here, visitors will find a vibrant selection of goods, ranging from traditional clothes to household items and local specialties. The fair market offers an authentic cultural experience, where travelers can immerse themselves in a lively atmosphere.

3.5. Earthen houses

Built with simplicity yet remarkable craftsmanship, these houses typically have three sections with no side wings and only two wooden beams supporting the roof. Durable local wood is used in the construction. 5. How to get to Lung Cu from Ha Giang City?

Lung Cu is about 160 kilometers away from Ha Giang City and 20 kilometers away from Dong Van District. The journey from Ha Giang City to Lung Cu will take you through some of northern Vietnam’s most scenic landscapes, making the trip an experience in itself.

If you have a vehicle and are departing from Ha Giang City, you can choose between these two routes:

  • Via National Road 4C (158 kilometers): Follow National Road 4C to Cot Co Quoc Gia Street in Dong Van. Keep going until you reach Lung Cu. 
  • Via Provincial Road 176 (174 kilometers): Take National Road 34, Provincial Road 176, Provincial Road 182, then National Road 4C to Cot Co Quoc Gia Street. The rest is as mentioned above.

Along the way, you will follow winding mountain roads, passing by iconic sights such as Quan Ba Heaven Gate, Ma Pi Leng Pass, and beautiful fields of buckwheat flowers in bloom. You can also explore cultural attractions such as the Hmong King’s Palace and Dong Van Old Quarter.
