3.3. Nau Ruou Cave

Nau Ruou Cave, stretching 250 meters, boasts a higher and wider ceiling than most other Ninh Binh caves, allowing boats to navigate in both directions. This cave contains an underground water source more than 10 meters deep, which connects to the ancient capital of Hoa Lu. According to legend, it was once used to fetch water for brewing wine for the king. Pottery, jars, and wine-making tools were discovered here, earning the cave its name, which means “Wine Brewing Cave.”

3.4. Other caves

In addition to these major caves, visitors can explore Sinh Cave, Si Cave, Ba Giot Cave, Seo Cave, and Son Duong Cave, each ranging from 100 to 250 meters in length. The stalactites in these caves are often white or jade green, growing slowly due to the high silica oxide content in the limestone. This slow growth results in a mesmerizing, magical appearance. 

Particularly, Sinh Cave, Si Cave, and Ba Giot Cave are intertwined with a tragic love story. As legend has it, a prince, deeply in love with a princess, sought to marry her but found out that she had been given to a neighboring country. Heartbroken, he drowned himself in Si Cave after bathing in Ba Giot Cave, leaving behind a tale of unfulfilled love that still lingers in the atmosphere of these caves.

4. Am Tien Cave – among the most stunning Ninh Binh caves

As one of the most charming Vietnamese caves, Am Tien Cave is set dramatically against a backdrop of towering cliffs that rise majestically into the sky, along with a serene lake nestled at its base. Located 500 meters above sea level, the cave remains cool year-round, making it a refreshing retreat. The name “Mermaid Cave” comes from the cave’s underground stream, which evokes the imagery of an underwater world. 6. Vai Gioi Cave in Thung Nham, Ninh Binh

Vai Gioi Cave, the largest cave in Thung Nham Ecotourism Area, offers an awe-inspiring experience. To reach it, visitors must climb over 400 winding stone steps that hug the mountainside, surrounded by lush bamboo groves and stunning views of the valley below. 10. Thien Ton Cave in Ninh Binh

Thien Ton Cave is a fascinating complex of caves and temples located to the east of Hoa Lu. This cave system consists of two parts: the Outer Cave and the Inner Cave. It is home to many valuable relics, including arhat statues, incense burners, and a stone altar featuring patterns of “two dragons worshiping the moon.” Additionally, this Ninh Binh cave complex houses a large bell dating from the Canh Hung era (1740-1786), which has four knobs that produce four distinct sounds. Ma Tien Cave, located halfway up Ma Tien Mountain, is accessible by climbing about 100 stone steps. The cave entrance is large, resembling the open mouth of a giant fish, leading to a sunken floor filled with variously shaped rocks. Moving through a narrow passage, visitors will reach the second floor of the cave, which features five chambers. The highest chamber houses a “jade well” with clear water. The cave is well-ventilated and naturally illuminated by three open-air doors on the mountaintop, providing a refreshing atmosphere throughout.
