The tourist area of Pongour Falls boasts a rich tapestry of vegetation tucked away within a sprawling 2.5-hectare-wide forest. Despite the reduced water flow from hydroelectric operations, its expansive breadth of approximately 100 meters is captivating enough.

The name “Pongour Falls” originates in the French phonetic transcription from the indigenous K’ho language, meaning “the master of the white clay land.” As documented in French geological records, this locale is abundant in kaolin, a white clay soil noted for its resilience to fire.

What distinguishes Pongour Falls from other Da Lat waterfalls is the arrangement of its rocks. The stream is fragmented into myriad creeks, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of frothy white cascades.

3. What to explore on a Pongour Waterfall tour?

3.1. Learn about the legend surrounding Pongour Falls

According to the local K’ho legend, this land was once overseen by Kanai – a graceful female leader known for her prowess in taming wild creatures. It was said that four rhinoceroses faithfully followed her orders, helping divert streams, cultivate lands, and safeguard the community. On a full moon day in spring, Kanai drew her last breath. Moved by sorrow, the four rhinoceroses remained by her side until their passing. Soon after, Pongour Waterfall emerged in the same spot.

The locals believe the waterfall to be Kanai’s transformed hair, with its clear, calm water reflecting her serene life. The massive rocks beneath the cascade are said to represent the horns of the four rhinoceroses, symbolizing an everlasting bond between humans and nature.

3.2. Admire the waterfall’s majestic scenery

Pongour Falls Vietnam stands nearly 40 meters tall and over 100 meters wide, featuring seven cascading tiers of rocks. Surrounded by a lush forest teeming with diverse flora and fauna, Pongour’s allure lies in its irregularly stacked rock formations, which fracture the water into countless frothy streams. These streams cascade gracefully over moss-covered rocks which converge into a vast pool below.

Strolling along the right side of the waterfall downstream for 500 meters feels akin to traversing a natural botanical garden, with ancient trees seemingly emerging from the rocks. Heading upstream on the left side unveils rocky cliffs adorned with intricate rock formations and moss.

3.3. Experience fascinating outdoor activities

At Pongour Waterfall, it would be a waste not to organize outdoor activities like camping, hiking, or BBQ parties. You can prepare camping gear and food at home and choose an ideal spot near the waterfall to immerse yourself in nature, creating unforgettable experiences amidst the vastness of the landscape.

3.4. Participate in the annual Pongour Falls festival

Annually, on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the local villagers hold a festival at Pongour Falls filled with cultural activities. This event also doubles as an occasion for K’Ho couples to express their affection and aspiration for a lasting relationship amidst the grandeur of the waterfall. A highlight of the Pongour Waterfall festival is the “matchmaking ceremony.” During this ceremony, enamored couples partake in romantic rituals such as seeking “heavenly destiny” water beneath the waterfall, exchanging “heavenly destiny” cups, reciting vows, and illuminating lanterns amidst the cascading waters.
