Specifically, it enters Vietnam at Ha Khau and extends about 556 kilometers before flowing through Hanoi for approximately 120 kilometers. In Hanoi, the Red River stretches from Phong Van Commune in Ba Vi District to Quang Lang Commune in Phu Xuyen District.

Geographically, the Red River in Vietnam features a fan-shaped delta with steep upper reaches and gentler gradients downstream. This topography causes rapid water rises during the rainy season, which slowly recedes afterward. The river discharges around 120-160 cubic kilometers of water annually into the sea, bringing 50-130 million tons of sediment each year. Thus, the Red River also ranks 12th globally in terms of silt load.
