1. Overview of animals in Son Doong Cave
Son Doong Cave is home to a diverse range of animals, all thriving in its unique environment. The food chain starts with basic elements like rocks, water, soil, and plants, which sustain herbivores such as squirrels, beetles, crickets, millipedes, and lizards. These herbivores are preyed upon by carnivores like snakes, bats, and foxes. Bacteria and fungi decompose the remains of animals, turning them into nutrients that support other organisms in the cave.

Over seven Son Doong Cave new species have been discovered, including fish, frogs, lizards, spiders, scorpions, and cave swiftlets. These Son Doong Cave animals have adapted to the cave’s dim lighting and humidity, often developing translucent bodies and losing their need for eyes. In Doline 2, or the Garden of Edam, you can find flying squirrels, snakes, monkeys, and possibly an eagle owl.
The cave is particularly rich in arthropods, with 80 species reported, including 10 new ones and 13 not yet classified. This indicates that Son Doong Cave is the perfect habitat for these small creatures.

Some animals in the cave are unique, such as Camel Crickets, which may be a new species. Additionally, 13 arachnid species, thought to be new to science, have adapted to the cave’s conditions with features like reduced eyes and lighter colors. Tourists can only get access to Son Doong Cave via exclusive tours operated by Oxalis. Is Son Doong Cave dangerous? Encountering the cave’s animals can carry risks, but danger is relatively low. The cave is home to a variety of creatures, including insects, snakes, and centipedes. While bites are rare, they can be a hazard.
