2. Learn about the history of Thong Nhat Park in Hanoi

After 1954, Vietnam was still divided into the North and the South, with an ongoing fierce war wreaking havoc on the country. At that time, officers from the South who moved to the North for education chose the location Thong Nhat Park as the venue for their regular gatherings and meetings.

Later, Thong Nhat Park was built thanks to voluntary contributions from Hanoians. The name “Thong Nhat”, meaning Reunification, reflected Vietnamese people’s fervent wishes for an independent, reunited country. At that time, the location of Thong Nhat Park was next to the then National Highway No.1 and the North – South Railway, which witnessed thousands of trains carrying southern officers to the North. Thong Nhat Park was not only a gathering place but had also witnessed various historical changes from the wartime till the day Vietnam was reunified.

Today, Thong Nhat Park is still the largest park in Hanoi, with a lake covering up to 28ha. The park borders 4 main streets of Hanoi, namely Tran Nhan Tong, Dai Co Viet, Le Duan và Nguyen Dinh Chieu.

Thong Nhat Park Hanoi is the destination of choice for many people of all ages who want to find a green corner to relax and do some exercises. Located in the middle of a crowded and noisy city, the park is similar to a precious green oasis bringing clean air and tranquility.

Thong Nhat Park is beautiful all year round. During spring and summer, the park is the place where people can find all kinds of blooming flowers and lush trees. In autumn and winter, it is the ideal place to enjoy the mild sunlight and dry breezes while running around the lake.

The front of the statues is in a southward direction, reminding people of President Ho Chi Minh’s deep longing for a visit to the country’s southern region. The statues were built to commemorate the two great leaders’ invaluable contributions to the nation’s independence and to express Vietnamese people’s desire for a reunified country.

3.3. Bay Mau Lake and Hoa Binh Island

The Bay Mau Lake takes up the majority of Thong Nhat Park, creating a vast open space for people to hang out. Located in the middle of Bay Mau Lake is Hoa Binh Island – a common venue for various community events, team-building activities and a gathering point for different clubs, groups.

Hoa Binh Island is a boisterous hotspot inside Thong Nhat Park. Every afternoon, Hanoians from all parts of the city come here to do exercise, practice Tai Chi, organize singing and dancing classes, etc.

In the past, the island was often referred to as Stork Island (Dao Co) because its lush trees used to shelter thousands of storks. Unfortunately, Hanoi’s urban growth has turned the city into a noisy and crowded place, driving storks away from their favorite shelter. Bustling though it may be, Hoa Binh Island can also be a tranquil and poetic place at times. Before it was linked with the lakeshore through a bridge, people had to get to the island by boat.

The whole house is covered with various pictures made from 2 million broken pottery pieces of different colors, thus becoming a new, intriguing hot spot for both tourists and locals.

The Mirror House has a length of 60 meters and an average height of 6 meters, with 812 square meters of walls, ceilings and floors being covered in pottery.
