Thu Thiem Tunnel is a remarkable architectural structure located beneath the Saigon River, connecting District 1 to the new urban area of Thu Thiem in District 2. In addition to linking these two districts, the tunnel also connects neighboring districts like District 7, Binh Thanh District, and District 4. After 7 years of construction, the tunnel officially opened in November 2011, earning the title of Southeast Asia’s most modern river tunnel.

As Southeast Asia’s most modern river tunnel, Thu Thiem boasts grand architecture and the latest advanced technologies. The Thu Thiem Tunnel length is 1,490 meters, and it consists of three main sections: the central city approach (585 meters), the Thu Thiem approach (535 meters), and the submerged tunnel (4 segments, totaling 370 meters).

It has a width of over 33 meters and a height of nearly 9 meters. The tunnel is designed with two-way traffic, each lane featuring three lanes: two for cars and one for motorcycles, capable of handling 45,000 cars and 15,000 motorcycles daily.

Inside Thu Thiem Tunnel, traffic safety systems are constantly monitored around the clock by 140 staff members working in shifts and 54 cameras. There are 37 emergency exits along the tunnel, ensuring quick responses in case of incidents. The tunnel is expected to last for 100 years and can withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 7.

Additionally, the tunnel is equipped with state-of-the-art systems for ventilation, water pumping, dehumidification, lighting, alarm communication, fire prevention, and sensors for monitoring noise, humidity, and air quality.

On weekends or public holidays, the park can get crowded, so it is recommended to arrive earlier to avoid traffic or not finding a good spot.

4.2. How to get there?

Thanks to its convenient location, visitors can easily reach the Thu Thiem Tunnel Park by motorbike, car, or taxi, with a simple route:

  • From District 1: Visitors will head to Vo Van Kiet Street and continue straight to the tunnel. After passing the tunnel, you turn left at the first intersection and follow the inner road to the park.
  • From District 2: You follow Mai Chi Tho Street until the end, where you will reach the tunnel. Then, you turn into the inner lane to reach the park.
  • From Thu Duc City: Visitors will travel along Ha Noi Highway, turn left at the Cat Lai intersection, then follow the new Thu Thiem road straight to the rooftop.
  • From Cat Lai Port: You head along Le Phung Hieu Street to Nguyen Thi Dinh Street, then continue on Dong Van Cong Road and Mai Chi Tho Street. You follow the road to the tunnel and turn into the inner lane for the park.
