Data from the 2021 Statistical Yearbook released by the General Statistics Office reveals that Vietnam population in 2021 was approximately 98.5 million people. Among them, the urban population was 36.6 million people, accounting for 37.1%, while the rural population was 61.9 million people, accounting for 62.9%.
The male population was 49.1 million people, representing 49.8%, while the female population was 49.4 million people, representing 50.2%. The sex ratio of the population in 2021 was 99.4 males per 100 females.
The report indicated that during the period of 2015-2020, the average life expectancy in Vietnam increased from 73.3 years to 73.7 years. However, by 2021, the average life expectancy slightly decreased to 73.6 years.

2. Vietnam life expectancy male and female
Regarding Vietnam life expectancy by gender, it is observed that the life expectancy of women tends to be higher than that of men. Specifically, the average life expectancy of men increased from 70.7 years in 2015 to 71.1 years in 2021. On the other hand, the average life expectancy of women increased from 76.1 years (2015) to 76.4 years (2021).

Among the six regions in Vietnam, the average life expectancy in the Southeastern region reached the highest level in the country, which was 76.2 in 2020. Meanwhile, the Central Highlands had the lowest number, which was 71 in the same year.
Additionally, in 2020, the number in the Mekong Delta region reached 74.9, the Red River Delta 74.8, the North Central Coast 73.2, and the Northern mountainous region 71.4.

4. Vietnam life expectancy compared to other Southeast Asian and the world
Comparing Vietnam life expectancy to other countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has made significant improvement. According to the report by the General Statistics Office, the average life expectancy of an individual in Southeast Asia is 73 years. Specifically, the average life expectancy of men is 70 years, while that of women is 76 years.
In 2021, the average life expectancy of Vietnamese people ranked fifth among a total of 11 countries in Southeast Asia. Specifically, Vietnam’s average life expectancy falls behind Singapore (84 years), Brunei (77 years), Thailand (77 years), and Malaysia (75 years). On the other hand, countries with lower average life expectancy than Vietnam include Indonesia (73 years), the Philippines (71 years), Cambodia (70 years), East Timor (70 years), Laos (66 years), and Myanmar (66 years).
In 2021, Vietnam life expectancy was 73.6 years, while the global average life expectancy was 72.81 years. Factors such as improvements in healthcare, quality of life in Vietnam, and public health initiatives have contributed to Vietnam’s higher life expectancy compared to the global average.
