Vietnamese Teacher’s Day, locally known as “Ngày Nhà giáo Việt Nam”, is a day that holds a special place in the hearts of students, educators, and the entire nation. Celebrated every November 20th, it is a day devoted to honoring those who have dedicated their lives to nurturing the minds and futures of students. This annual occasion goes beyond mere appreciation; it is a heartfelt celebration of the profound influence teachers have on society. In this article, we will explore its history, meaning, and more.

1. When is Vietnamese Teacher’s Day?

In January 1946, an international organization of progressive teachers was established in Paris as FISE (Féderation International Syndicale des Enseignants – International Union of Education Unions).

Three years later, at a conference in Warsaw, the International Union of Educational Trade Unions issued a “Charter of Teachers” on the fight against bourgeois and feudal education, building an education which protects the rights of the teaching profession and teachers, and upholding the responsibilities and position of the teaching profession and teachers.

The Vietnam Education Union was one of 57 countries that attended the 1975 FISE meeting, which took place in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, from August 26 to 29. It was decided in this conference to establish November 20, 1958, as “International Charter of Teachers Day”. This event marked the origin of the November 20th celebration.

Today, in Vietnam, this special occasion is referred to as Vietnamese Teacher’s Day. The day was first celebrated in Northern Vietnam and later extended to liberated areas in the South, and it serves as a day to honor and acknowledge the contributions of educators in Vietnam.

2. Meaning of Teacher’s Day in Vietnam

Teacher’s Day in Vietnam is a special occasion that holds deep cultural and historical significance. It is a day when Vietnamese people express their gratitude and respect for teachers, educators, and mentors. This day reflects the profound value placed on education and the vital role that teachers play in shaping the future of the nation.

But the meaning of Teacher’s Day in Vietnam goes beyond mere appreciation; it embodies the collective recognition of the tireless dedication and hard work of teachers. It serves as an opportunity for students and the community to express their heartfelt thanks to those who have imparted knowledge and wisdom. Teachers are held in high regard as they not only educate but also nurture the personal and moral development of students.

In Vietnamese culture, teachers are often considered to be second parents, guiding students not only in academics but also in life. This day is a chance for students to show their love and respect by giving flowers, gifts, and heartfelt notes to their teachers, along with performances and activities to make teachers feel cherished.
