Historical records indicate that in the third year of King Tu Duc’s reign, Yen Tu was a recognized mountain rising through layers of mist in all seasons. This breathtaking scenery has long inspired poets, leaving behind a legacy of literary masterpieces.

Yen Tu Mountain is also steeped in legends. According to ancient tales, Vietnamese Buddhist followers once came here to build humble meditation huts and recite scriptures. It is said that in the late 3rd century BCE, a Chinese Taoist named An Ky Sinh arrived in search of an elixir of immortality. He eventually turned into stone, giving the mountain its name, “Yen Tu.”

By the early 13th century, during the Tran Dynasty, Yen Tu Mountain was developed into a vast religious complex of temples. It became the retreat of King Tran Nhan Tong after he abdicated the throne. Here, he founded the Truc Lam Zen sect, Vietnam’s first native Buddhist school. He and his disciples translated, compiled, and disseminated Buddhist scriptures, establishing Yen Tu as the spiritual center of Vietnamese Buddhism during that period.

Hoa Yen Pagoda serves as the central temple of Yen Tu Mountain. It follows the traditional architecture with a main hall dedicated to Buddha, an ancestral house, and bell towers. Archaeological excavations in 2001 revealed the foundations of the original Tran Dynasty-era pagoda. Inside, sacred statues of Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and King Tran Nhan Tong are arranged solemnly. Located just 200 meters away from Van Tieu Pagoda, Bao Sai Pagoda is named after a Zen master who once practiced there. Originally a simple meditation cave on Yen Tu Mountain during the Tran Dynasty, the pagoda now has a grand structure with many ancient worship statues. Behind it lies a stone cave believed to be the remains of the original pagoda. In front of the cave, visitors can admire an ancient tree marked by tiger claw scars, a statue of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, and Tra Ty Tower.

2.1.8. Heaven Gate & Buddha Stele

Another remarkable attraction on Yen Tu Mountain is Heaven Gate, a natural rock formation that serves as a passage leading to the summit and Dong Pagoda. It fascinates geologists and tourists alike with visible ocean wave marks, fossilized seashells, and ancient marine sediments – evidence of a prehistoric seabed dating back approximately 200 million years ago, according to scientists.

Near Heaven Gate, there is the Buddha Stele, a naturally occurring rock slab inscribed with ancient Chinese characters. Although its origins remain unknown, the stele prominently features a large vertical character for “Buddha” alongside four smaller horizontal inscriptions, giving it the name “Buddha Stele.”

Yen Tu Mountain is home to numerous sacred statues. Among them is the statue of An Ky Sinh – a Taoist hermit from China. Despite thousands of years of natural erosion, the figure remains intact.
