Nam Nha Pagoda, also known as Nam Nha Duong or Nam Nha Buddhist Hall, is one of the most significant historic sites in Can Tho. Surrounded by greenery, it offers a peaceful space for spiritual reflection and relaxation.
The name “Nam Nha” literally means “a call to practice Buddhism,” but locals also refer to it as Minh Su Pagoda. Beyond its religious role for Minh Su followers, it played an important part in patriotic movements in the 19th and 20th centuries. On January 25, 1991, it was officially recognized as a National Historical Site of Vietnam.

2. The history of Nam Nha Pagoda
Nam Nha Pagoda was founded by Nguyen Giac Nguyen (1850–1919), also called Nguyen Phuong Thao, with the religious name Long Khe Dao Nhan and the title Nguyen Dao Co.
In 1895, he built a small three-room pagoda near Binh Thuy River, which expanded in 1905 into a larger five-hall structure. By the early 1900s, when it later fell into disrepair, French restrictions delayed restoration. With help from Nguyen Hao Van and Bui Huu Sanh, the pagoda was rebuilt in 1917 using brick, tile, and imported materials.

3. Things to explore at Nam Nha Pagoda
3.1. Ancient architecture
Nam Nha Pagoda was built near a river to allow worshippers easy access by boat, the main mode of transport in the past. Its brick gate with a tiled roof faces Binh Thuy Canal, flanked by stone pillars bearing verses that form the pagoda’s name.
A red-tiled courtyard leads to a lush riverside garden with a 2-meter-high rock feature in a brick pond. Old pine, thuja, and ornamental trees line the grounds, carefully pruned over decades.
The main hall, built of brick with five rooms and a yin-yang tiled roof, features a rare mix of Asian and European styles. Inside are altars to Buddha, Confucius, and Laozi, and memorials to the founder Nguyen Dao Co and other leaders.
3.2. Unique woodblocks
Behind the main hall of Nam Nha Pagoda, there is a row of ancient buildings housing over 100 nearly century-old woodblocks. Visitors can see and even hold these remarkable woodblocks, each engraved with intricate and precise Han characters carved in reverse on both sides. Their sizes vary based on the texts they were made for.
These woodblocks are a valuable heritage of Han-script literature. Notable works include “Hoang Nam Dia Chi Toan Do”, “Hai Thuong Lan Ong Y Tong Tam Linh”, and “Kim Cang Kinh Luan.”
